So many questions that you insist upon but you are in the trade and should be telling me what a mechanic does to change this filter element.
I am satified that I have done mine to the best information available unless you can tell me any better.

I was hoping to get sensible simple Yes or No answers
debating Blue print or others was not on my agenda
From such an apparent source of researched knowledge the questions should not be hard
PS Dave Newell you seem to be applying to much tourque ? is your tool saying differant to others in use?
Responding to any further flippant comments is also not on my agenda.
Im trying to have an intelligent Q&A session

My mistake Geo, I'm sat in a cold field in Newark and quoted 35nm from an old and tired memory. The correct torque (30nm) is, as Techno has proved, moulded into the filter housing itself. I bought my tool form my parts supplier and it is the Blue print one.

Did you have help with that comment or is it all your own work:RollEyes:

I'm not slating the motor trade. I'm sure there are very many vans out there that had their filter changed correctly. Why defend incompetence

Why defend incompetance
A very good question I wasnt expecting, I have to date seen no evidence of any
What would be a reasonable time to stand and watch a fuel housing for leaks after fitting
would it be 10 mins 1/2 hr 3 hrs what?
what happens with the 99.9 % of leaks that happen days weeks after installation
Who is to blame for those.
I can Guarantee Dave did not send either of his two failures out with a leak. so where was the incompetence just who did the blame lay with

Answer just that one question satisfactorily And I will drop it

I can tell from the change in tone of your reply's you are now getting warm under the collar and would rather end this conversation

This forum is constantly knocking someone these days im looking to play devil advocate
You as an amateur fit 1 maybe 2 with a 100% success rate taking possibly half a day to do it and hail yourself competent:Cool:

I fit 102 with a 99.9 success rate in 15 mins each and im the failure:Doh:
WE DO NOT SEND VEHICLES OUT WITH KNOWN FUEL LEAKS
If we did that would make us Incompetent

I'm not the least bit hot under the collar :roflmto: To the contrary I have given useful information for people to make their own choices (with pictures) all you do is defend.
Half a day? does it take you so long? an hour including pictures, probably 30 mins next time

Sorry to see you taking this so personally, as far as I can see you have not been involved in,or blamed, for the leaking filter mentioned in this post.

I know I have not said anything against you & I'd like to think no one posting on this thread means anything against you either.
I'm sure ( or at least I hope) there are still a few reliable & reputable people involved in the motor trade, it's just I have not had first hand experience of any lately.

PS No just getting too old

stop digging Geo I think you know you should be using the correct tool its the same one that has been working on other cars for 10 years or more it clearly tells you on the filter how to fit it.
As for any Fiat dealer denying the use or existence of such a tool they clearly are incompetent

Contact the seller the inbuilt compatability guide is very often wrong. Also I'm sure they will acquire one if it's not.

One extra snippet of info I will add.
This blueprint tool is designed to sacrifice itself to protect the filter housing. Overtightening beyond 30nm will result in the cup part that sits in the vice beginning to twist and deform thus absorbing any attempt to overtighten.

Also I was incorrect when I said you only need a pozidrive screwdriver :roflmto: You will of course need a 13mm spanner or socket to remove the headlight. EDIT 10mm

In the early days of cam belt replacement
In cases of premature cam belt failures and warranty claims running into £1000s of pounds for the resulting engine damage
The first question from the belt supplier is what tools were used? Ie cam belt (tensioning tool)
Don't even contemplate saying you use a Snap on one if something else was specified
if you cant prove 100% you did everything right you must have done it wrong so no compensation
its only getting worse these days with everything getting more complex and a proliferation of Forum Barrack room lawyers
Hence my seemingly reasonable questions
Geo

Good points and thanks for posting - just shows the days we live in. I think that Techno's answers cover the liability issue. I must admit that I did not check my copy of the Fiat manual that I have on disk.

What I don't understand is why this is being made a Fiat issue at all. The filter housings are manufactured by UFI not Fiat so it should be a UFI approved method of replacing an element.

Please read the answer

Geo the following you seem to have dismissed as not published by Fiat and you were given a link in a previous post

filter a-L.jpg

is a page from the FIAT SPA training manual it clearly describes the tool and part number.

I would like to ask your method of changing this type of filter as it has been used for over 10 years and you said you have changed many ?
You also said you pay a large amount of money for technical data access so what does that tell you to use?

This thread has turned to jelly....and turned personal. Relax chaps.

Its a crap design........its too expensive........and Fiat chose to use it .

It comes with instructions on how to put it on .

There must have been better ways of skinning this particular cat.

Some designers should be shot .

I agree that to make this housing out of plastic is ludicrous, but Istill think that the seal is the culprit, it is too thin and is not compressed enough to give a reliable seal.
Has anybody bought one from Opie oils, the link was in a previous post, cannot be any worse than the Fiat item, this ongoing problem is destroying my enjoyment of owning this M/H.

I checked a post on another forum and it seems that the one sold by Opie oils is the same unit but cheaper at £92 delivered
Ignore the generic image

Ordered new filter assembly yesterday from e-bay, arrived at lunchtime today, fitted it this afternoon, no leaks, fingers crossed, hopefully end of saga.
Fiat dealer had told me that this plastic type of filter often leak, and that they are not interchangeable with the metal type 2014 filter, as far as they know.
