I am hoping that someone else has had the same problem and can steer me to a solution.

My engine starter seems to work fine but as soon as I release the key the engine stops. My only solution is to push the revs up to 4000 and then it will run as normal.

This problem has coincided with my water temperature gauge not working anymore. Instead of taking 10 minutes to show normal temperature it shoots to normal with the first turn of the key.

My gut instinct tells me a computer problem is at the heart of the matter.

Any clues???

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
Faulty ignition switch? Once the revs are up it runs off the power from the alternator.
Just a gut feeling without further info.

sounds like a wiring fault to me. have you checked for the apparently common fault of the loom rubbing on metalwork near the fusebox causing a short?

also agree that if the fault goes away when revving up to 4000, this is when the alternator is putting out peak power. battery must be holding charge if it spins the starter and starts the engine

Weird one, the only way a diesel stops is when the fuel is cut off by the fuel solenoid which is energised from the ignition switch .............................

Might be a ckue

Thanks peter, I think you might be right. Is it the sort of problem that computer diagnostics will solve?

it might put out a fault code, but not definitely

you say that revving at 4000rpm it runs as normal. does it stay running if you then drop the revs or just stop?

if it were me, i would call out the AA or RAC if your a member

Yes, once it has started it runs fine until I stop again. I have almost developed a starter routine that does make a lot of noise on the front end.

could be alternator begining to fail or a bad/corroded connection. insufficient volts being output to hold the pump solenoid open until you increase revs

The only way forward is a diagnostic check up. You can fiddle all you like, and look for "wiring faults", you could also get a rather large branch and give it a damn good hiding...to the same effect.
Financially, getting a diagnostic check is cost effective. It may seem like a few quids, but, its better than guesswork, and a computer in the hands of a good technician, is the only way forward on modern vehicles. Did you know, that doing a continuity test on certain parts of the wiring loom can cause problems with the ECU ? If you did,nt.......then you certainly need it checked out, get a quote from your Fiat dealer, or trusted local garage.
To diagnose an alarm fault on a recently owned Landrover, cost me £75........worth every penny, the part was cheap and I fitted it free......twas locating the fault that foxed me and all my mates.

It could be a host of things from immobiliser fault, injector, fuel leak (air seep) right along to head gasket (poor compression/temp gauge shooting up) - it could be ecu causing the whole problem.

I would go on diagnostics, check compression and injectors, fuel pump and immobiliser, check fuel lines and sensors. Might pay to go to a diesel engine specialist rather than a main dealer, who will do diagnostics as well as find the fault.
