Can someone with a motorhome with one of these 2.8 JTD engines from around 2004 provide me the gear ratios for the 5 speed manual. My old 2.8 TD has a .8 4th and a .6 5th gear which are not good for my towing application.

Thanks
Peter

A long time now
Hi, I have the same engine and used to tow a car occasionally and would have liked a little more oomph ,so at one of the shows I asked WOW tuning to remap my van and it was like driving a different van the power and torque were there and mileage was not noticeably different and if you didn't like it they would put back your original settings so that may be something to think about rather than mess about with gearbox ratios .(y)

Thanks for that. I don't have one at the moment but an earlier model with the 'bad' gear ratios. just wanted to know if the later models had a different gear set.

I fitted an Ebay tuning chip to mine. The difference in power selected for more torque was significant and startling.

Cannot chip mine as it is an earlier mechanical injection version.
If its a 2004 jtd as you said in your op then it is not mechanical injection. There was a lower 5th gear option on x244 models (reverse is left of 1st, the earlier x230 had reverse to the right of 4th). The higher 5th gear is 0.733:1 and the lower gear is 0.58:1. The two gears for the lower ratio are £179.21 and £77.95 +vat from a Fiat dealer.

Dave - do you know if the higher ratio 5th is still available? I have a 2005 Hymer B584 that runs 3200rpm at a genuine 65mph and which feels very low geared - even when towing a car trailer.

My local Fiat dealer's parts dept gave me the ratios and prices about four months ago so they should still be available. In view of your speedo error I'd guess you have 15" wheels, changing to 16" would solve both problems I think.
