I don't drive fast (I know that because most MH's pass me) and always tiptoe on the accelerator, I don't like paying for fuel - who does :ROFLMAO: so save as much as I can, after all I am in no hurry, I'm on the longest holiday of my life.

Got a 4 tonne overcab with the 3 litre lump and get an average of 26.8 mpg mostly towing a boat, so reasonably pleased. Better than my 2.0JTD on last van which was only 3.4 tonnes and struggled to better 24.5mpg.

This is what I can't understand.
Lots of people claim 30+ mpg and some in the low 20's, Why?

I've given up with the computer, from tyneside to home it said 20.5 but from longridge to lancaster it said 36.2 ? Various other trips gave equally spurious results.
I am trying the old fashioned way of fill to fill, though not able to use the van at the moment,
& it's not looking good by the way the guage is going down!

The only positive way to check your mpg is to neck the tank each time you fill up then calculate the mpg that way. I think anyone saying that their 3ltr Fiat is returning over 30mpg is dreaming or they spend more time in silent 6th. I used to own a 3ltr Tracker and I thought I was lucky if I was getting a return of 20mpg. It was running on 15 inch wheels though and the speedo was indicating far more than true.
I would have fitted 16 inch wheels but the spare wheel carrier was to small.
I now have a 2.3 ltr which is well on top of it's job and the fuel consumption is nearer 28mpg. Some owners have them remapped to 150bhp but I don't think it's necessary.
From 2010 the 2.3 ltr has been fitted with a different gearbox to the earlier model which suffered from the dreaded clutch judder. The later version is perfect and trouble free.

I am certainly not dreaming I used to get 26mpg,if you were a member of the owners club
the opportunity arises once or twice a year to have your m/h remapped by Qantum the BHP figures were 157 before 203 after hence the extra power allows the auto box to stay in
higher gears which gives you better fuel economy and a smoother ride

My 26.8 was calculated from new using a spreadsheet and inputting the data every fill up. It is an old habit from the days where your company car tax depended upon the miles travelled and still do it. Don't drive above 60mph very much.

I don't know why people do get hung up about fuel consumption so much - you just know that it is going to be thirsty so best to just live with it. The right foot has much more to do with economy than type of fuel and any other factor apart from what you are towing behind you. If I drove mine like I stole it probably 18mpg. If feather footed and driving at 50 in the middle lane all day then probably about 30mpg (if I lived that long!). The last thing I want to worry about having spend upwards of 40k on a van is whether it is going to cost me an extra fiver or tenner when I fill up every time. Just enjoy the van.........

i never worry about fuel consumption and drive to the conditions or when on motorway ( i use motorways to get where i am going quick and easy ) set cruise control at 69 mph.

Its all about personal choice and personal priorities.:thumb:

Driving style, which roads you prefer to travel on, speed, these will always affect you MPG

Watching the computers average MPG figures shows some interesting effects. Wind always increases the fuel used & when I travel down the same rout often it never fails to surprise me the way it changes.

I wish!
The difference between 20mpg & 25mpg = £400 a year & between 20mpg & 33 as some seem to be getting is £1000 a year:Eeek:

The last van was a 2.8 jtd with cruise usually running at about 3800kg & initially gave 21mpg. After remapping, over a years driving (6000 miles), it averaged 25.6 mpg.

Looking at quoted figures on the forum & from Fiat, I expected this to be as good if not better.

If you are doing 6000 miles a year and the difference is £1000 it makes the cost of fuel £8.42 a gallon!!!!

Better start shopping around

think you got your calcs wrong; difference between 20 & 25 to gallon for 6000 miles is around 60 gallons ... 60 gallons is about £390

not that i agree or disagree with the claim its just the maths

And I said a tenner a fill up - not over a year........ Simple way of reducing fuel consumption - don't drive the van, just leave it at home. My view is that it will cost whatever it costs and that is the price of choosing the lifestyle, so don't get hung up over it - life is too short and too many other things to worry about

I was working out the difference between 20 and 33 mpg over 6000 miles about 120 gallons if the difference were £1000 =£8.33 a gallon or perhaps my maths is out

So.. got the 3litre multijet... know the sort of mileage we expect to get on average..
We are going to tow..weight inc trailer it will be about 1300kg .. The engine can obviously easily cope with that weight.. whats people experience of the mpg hit when towing a small car etc. What should we expect?
(6th grear ..cruise control .. 55-65mph motorway/autoroute driving)

I've got a 4tonne van with the aerodynamic properties of a house brick and usually tow my sailing dinghy - I suppose with road base and all the crap (the dinghy itself had better be light or I want my money back from the builders!) about 500 kg and average 26.8 mpg (don't believe the trip computer; it lies) usually steady driving at 60 or below

We're getting 28 mpg from our 3 litre, no towing but the car doesn't add any wind drag, conceivably it might even reduce it, in the same way a motorbike with pillion can sometimes go faster then a solo bike.

I have worked on and driven several 3 litre vans with over 150000 miles on and they seem to be quite good if serviced on time and with the correct low ash synthetic oil.
personally I wouldn't buy a euro 5 one as there are major problems to be had with the electronics and the Particulate filters on the engines.

on average from driving panel vans and my motorhome at 3.5 tons you should get depending on driving style between 26-28 mpg at 5 tons average will be around 20-23 and at 6 tons around 18 mpg this is based on my personal experiences with work vans loaded and towing and my motorhome solo and towing.
