thinking of going away longer period off grid, have recently changed both batteries, we still have the old batteries which are in a reasonable condition.

we are taking a trailer on the back of the van , if we take old batteries as a back up power source what would be a suitable way to connect them into the van 12v system if needed.

obviously i wouldn't have thought using jump leads/

any other way apart from actually replacing batteries in the van

How do you propose to charge any of the batteries when you are away?

Since 2008 & many years tugging
If you have bought decent batteries you shouldn't have any problems, if you don't have a solar panel fitting one would be a better option.
You could connect the batteries in the trailer like they connect caravans split charge relay to charge thenm a connection back to the van via spare terminals in the 13 pin trailer plug/socket. IMO not worth the bother would be easier to fit solar.

Sorry do not know connect backup batteries up to your system, I think it would depend on your current power setup (EBL, charger etc..). As to charging, as they are only intended as a backup then have a charger and when you do have EHU plug it in.

We use our old battery, with an inverter and a charger which is plugged into a mains socket in the van. When touring every 4/5 days or so we tend to stay at a site, then the battery is charged up, when off site we use the inverter for the coffee machine or to top up the bike batteries. We may fully integrate it all but want to make sure we actually need to before doing it, as current setup is very simple, inexpensive and works.

200 w solar into 2 110 amp batteries, both older batteries will be in the trailer and charged when driving via 12 v live feed to trailer, its just how to use batteries in trailer when solar not performing well , especially in winter

Here's the cat amongst the pigeons!

Buy a small quiet gennie! :D

Scrap the old batts.
If you've got 200W Solar & 2x 110 batts you should be ok, we can manage on that!
