Expanding foam on underslung tanks (1 Viewer)

Can you use expanding foam to spray on our underslung water and waste tanks to insulate them ?
What else do people use?

The yank tanks have foam every where. So I would say yes.
It's messy to do so I would say No
So it's up to you

If you buy a foam gun and gun applied foam (cheaper) you can control where you spray it quite easy - once it cures you can then trim it with a saw :thumb:

you can find cheaper guns and foam but this save looking around and not that expensive
Once used leave the can on the gun it will be OK after a year or more ---not sure on insulation propertys of the foam but it will be a lot better than nothing

Expanding foam can get easily get waterlogged so if used it would be a good idea to seal it with a bitumen paint of some sorts

i would be more inclined to fit stick on tank heaters, then use insulating foam board to box the tank in. its very lightweight good thermal properties and you can dismantle for maintenance later

3 problems with the single tin types of spray on foam;

1) It is not 100% closed cell so will get waterlogged as previously stated.
2) It is not fire retardant. If you need some welding done underneath at a later date it is a git to remove first. If you don't you will end up with lots of nice little camp fires all over the places where you don't want them.
3) Spraying it on is a pain in the arse as it goes everywhere BUT where you want it to go. (2 part urethane foam is much better)

Personally if it was me I would look at insulation that comes in rolls or sheets. I would also look at some kind of 12v heating element.

I haven't bothered on mine. When it gets cold I detach the pipes as they come out from the van and put separate buckets under each one which get emptied very regularly. As a full timer I found that underneath is no place for water no matter how much insulation you have, it will always eventually freeze.
