'why do you want to get to the UK'? Yes, we all assume its for our supposedly generous benefits but is it?

yes it is..
they interviewed a Syrian guy last night trying to get on a truck.. .. and that is exactly what he said..
when asked why he had travelled across Europe via Turkey, Greece and didn't stop.. his reply:

"Turkey.. No Good, Greece broken country.. UK great, plenty of benefits and good houses.. "

I notice on the BBC news website that the population of the UK is now 64.6 million, has increased by half a million since last year.

I always assumed that the UK was densely populated but according to this Wikipedia chart we are number 53 on the list of most crowded countries. Germany is 56th while France is 98th.

"These people need rounded up and sent home.."

The problem is that they are travelling without passports and will not tell anyone where, "Home" is.

So, where do you send them?
As far back as can be quickly traced. In many cases that will probably be the country they left before reaching Europe. Only by returning them (as soon as picked up in future) will the message be sent that Europe does not accept migrants who are prepared to break the law.

Good old statistics :)
To have real meaning they would have to exclude places like the Scottish Highlands and Lake District where building accommodation is unrealistic.

Getting There since 2013
We were hoping to go to France this September which would be our first time but seeing all this on the news is very off putting, so I take it by reading on here that even going by train you still have to run the gauntlet? Maybe I should be thinking about going to Germany

I do think that something should be done to stop this "Treasure Island" Britain our government has let this go on for to long, the migrants know if they can get here and get benefits they can claim for kids they have back home. Why doesn't the government just stop it now what are they waiting for? I did think that the Tories would have taken more of a stance against this with immediate action! I wonder if Thatcher would have taken more of a stance and would have been a better deterrent to the migrants (And that's coming from a Scot ;))

We left UK a couple of weeks ago for our first venture with van to France on tunnel. Going out was painless, didn't see any of the great unwashed. However, we are due to return tomorrow, so not sure what the situation will be until we get there...

No ,spot on. In the UKthey'd taser them. That's what the drivers should be carrying along with pepper spray/amoniaco etc.All legal.
Why they don't just tear gas the underside of every truck?

I've never used the tunnel so can't comment on that but I have used Calais Port for the ferries quite a lot and in my mind unless you want to, you don't have to stop or drop below 50 km per hour until you get to the security control. Is it along this road to the Port, the A216 from the A16 motorway, that the 'attacks' are happening?

Notwithstanding all of the political issues, we're due back in August and I can't see the situation changing. I've seen these miscreants marauding up the road on TV, so it's not sensationalism and I'm beginning to be worried.

Are there any sensible precautions or avoiding actions that can be taken? I have enough room for two adults in my overhang near the spare wheel!! What DO you actually do if someone clings underneath?

I'm also confused about one poster's comment regarding height restrictions in the car lane.

We came back yesterday (Wed) through the tunnel. From the A16 we came off the motorway no problems through passport control caught an earlier train and back in Blighty in 35mins.

Certainly no issues or problems for us.

Now if you were a Lorry driver well that another story.......

Yes.... dont stay anywhere near Calais. if that dont work for you and you get someone on van pull in and call the police on 112....:censored:

Seems that some use a situation that really only affects lorries (unless daft enough to overnight in Calais) for an unholy excuse for shameful sloganeering and bigotry.......

I'm also confused about one poster's comment regarding height restrictions in the car lane.

There is a height barrier once you have been past passport control etc, just to ensure taller vehicles don't try to head towards the waiting lanes set aside for vehicles destined for the double-deck carriages. You will easily see what this is all about when you get there. I'm sure there is a similar system at the Folkestone end too.

Sad really when you think that some if not more than most, once lived in a country that was considered part of the empire.
The reason they come here is that most have a basic grasp of English as opposed to French ,Italian ,Spanish and the likes.
The mess in the countries we liberated and extremists occupied ,we and our allies are to blame for .
It appears to me that most are economic migrants that have paid to come and play the system.Something has to be done ,if you were in Italy you'd be just as pissed off as us in the uk ,French Greeks etc .
It's a European problem we all need to get together and agree on the next step ,be it turning boats round or whatever.
Until it's well a known fact in the countries they come from ,that it's not a viable route to a better life, and that the European authorities will only deal with migration through legitimate channels ,they will keep coming.
If we banned all cash benefits and only paid food vouchers to non eu nationals until they were proven asylum seekers ,and had a European wide system where Eu nationals looking for work in other countries had to support themselves whilst looking for work and when out of work go home or claim nothing
Trouble is we live in a PC world and there are too many that don't want to offend!

On a ferry back from Dunkirk as we speak, passed the queues of HGVs and packs of marauding migrants at Calais (not kidding) on the way to Dunkirk, didn't see any packs of marauding funsters though so hopefully the migrants are all ok:D

Given the way that human rights legislation etc has been interpreted, often giving scrotes and criminals more rights than the poor sods who's lives they are blightin, I would imagine that the police would be arresting the drivers for driving without due care and attention should one of the attackers get squashed tootsies :banghead:

I have seen would-be immigrants interviewed on the tele a couple of times, they never seem to ask the obvious question - 'why do you want to get to the UK'? Yes, we all assume its for our supposedly generous benefits but is it?

If they do manage to get on a lorry and arrive in the UK what happens to them? I suspect they are released after a bit of form filling after promising to come back in a couple of months, yeah right.

Are these people 'entitled' to benefits in France or any of the other countries they have travelled through? In the UK we seem to have EU laws which say we have to look after and support them. Do those living in camps near Calais get handouts from the French taxpayer?

Paul

In France they are not entitled to anything from the State until their application to stay is processed. If they claim asylum, that takes a long time to process and rejection will bring deportation . ( Each time I flew from Toulouse I saw someone being escorted by Gendarmes onto an Africa bound flight--no exaggeration) while all this is going on there are no benefits whatsoever.
In Britain benefits are given as soon as they get into the UK. Many told to report weekly disappear. It's easy to find a community of fellow countrymen and a Mosques must provide assistance in the way of shelter, food. Likewise it is the duty of Muslims to provide for other Muslims. It is then easy to find ( illegal, usually) employment with no tax, no NI paid--- and no safety laws, health laws etc to protect workers.

Many of these are not "unfortunate wretches", they have homes and work possibilities at home. For some it gives them notoriety ( can't think of the English word, I want) to move away and be able to send money home. That raises their families esteem in the community.

I completed the final part of my PhD thesis in West Africa, living in a compound with local families, working in the local school. It was an eye opener into attitudes.

We were originally scheduled on a 10:50 departure this morning, but because of the recent issues we thought we'd get there early, just in case. There was no queue of lorries, did not spot any illegals, now in lane 8 awaiting the 08:50 train departure, so we get to travel earlier at no additional cost.

From our experience today, you really wouldn't know anything untoward had been going on here recently...

Dressed in expensive football shirts, mobile phones, money to pay traffickers, speak English, have travelled maybe 1000's of miles across a continent and seas, look nourished, intelligent enough to find a multitude of ways into a lorry.
Unfortunate wretches, give me a break!
