Essentials for the motohome (1 Viewer)

After getting our van we are now starting to put together stuff for it. Can I ask what you cannot do without and take?

The absolute essential used to be a corkscrew but, now that wine bottles have screw tops, I don't know - probably a bottle opener.

Things I can't do without on a trip are:

- A comfortable fold-up chair (a must have)
- Good books
- A radio
- Our folding bikes

Give me those and I'm good to go.

From a more practical perspective I'd have to throw in:

- A suitably long water hose with all the fitting adapters
- Toilet cleaning liquid
- Tyre pressure readout (I love knowing the tyre pressure is correct)
- SatNav (either in cab or on phone)
- Leveler ramps (or whatever they call them)

Hmmmm. I travel pretty light I suppose.

For us, it is ( in no particular order ):

Food
Booze
Telly
Games ( from cards to whatever )
Food
Pushbikes
Food
Table and chairs for outside
Solar panels and big batteries ( but we go off the grid a lot )
Rolypoly water barrel and pump to get water from barrel to tank AND a hose
Did I mention food ?
Kindles
iPads
Levelling blocks and little spirit level bullseye thing
Pens and paper

When Inam loading the van start at the airing cupboard , Towels/TeaTowels/DishCloth/Flanell, then Kitchen Rolls Toilet rolls and Baby wipes,

Kitchen load in food Fresh / Tinned / Freezer.

Clothes, including Welles or crocks for wet grass.

EVerything else stays in the van.

Table Chairs for outside
For longer trips clothes pegs and line
Gas lighter

a set of external screen covers You can use them inside too with a bit of fidling, either Taylor-made or silver screen, nothing to choose in them so go for cheapest

Because the shops are closed on Sunday and foreigners have unexpected holidays in the middle of the week we always make sure we have some part baked bread and long life milk. Work on the idea that you will need to provide at least two meals when the shops are shut.

Thought I was fully kitted up but after our first long trip in mh I realised I needed the following:

1 bucket to put under grey waste tap - saves you having to manoeuvre the van over the grey waste dump

1 washing up bowl with handles - easy to carry to washing up sinks, saves you space in the kitchen and can be put outside until designated washer-upper gets around to it

1 rotary clothes line - had a washing line but some sites won't allow you to put them up.

Good luck on your first trip.

Take as little as possible on the first trip apart from a corkscrew and a pen and paper then as you spend time in the MH start a list of must haves and would like. This will save you buying stuff then never using it.

Don't forget some games like dominos and cards as its known to rain the odd time in the UK

2. Polarity tester
3. Inverter for the extra gadgets
4. 12v/usb charger - doubles are best
5. Rubber brush /rubber broom great for the grass tracked inside
6. Extra Fuses
   
7. and a bucket of patience for when you realized you left a vital item behind

Don;t worry Mark if you forget anything write it down for next time because you will forget about some things you forgot about
This lot will have you filling the van with things you may need but never use
Best thing to take is a full wallet to buy things you need rather than buy things you may need

Must have......

I'll throw in..... a watering can! Before we first went I filled up with fresh water at home and bought a fancy stay-flat food grade hosepipe for filling on site.

First site didn't need to refill.... second site realised the couple of connectors I had didn't fit the site tap.... next site was such that no matter how many connectors I had or how I positioned the van, there was no way a hose would reach... I now have a big 10 litre watering can which is ideal for just topping up.

Other than that a torch and a bit of a basic tool kit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable spanner, DUCT tape/cable ties etc).

Good advice from Gerry however if you prefer motor racing,golf,shooting things and a bit of dancing,forget the cards and dominoes,what you need is a 12v adapter for a Nintendo Wii !
