A spare water pump? Never ever needed to replace one of those in all the years we've been motorhoming ... since 1996!

Essentials really would be bulbs, fuses, oil, wheel (ideally!), batteries for the remote, plus other stuff such as a pack of various sized small screws, glue, cable ties, string (don't ask how long!) and of course gaffer tape ... you can NEVER have too much gaffer tape!

We carry a spare water pump, not a lot of money , not a lot of weight, so many different sorts , where do you get one in the middle of France when you havnt had a shower for three days.:(
We also have all the other things @Minxy Girl says plus a couple of screwdrivers, mole grips and a moveable spanner, but above that you don't need as you would call out your breakdown.

Agree with all of that but you did forget WD40.

I did in Greece about 18 months ago, of course I had a spare.
I also carry a bottle gas top regulator with a hose that will allow me to by-pass the Truma regulator, not used yet but with all the reports of failed Truma's not worth the risk without one.
Spare corkscrew, broke one once, lucky we were in France so French van next door had one.
Cable ties and Gaffa tape are essential.

What to take will depend on the age of your vehicle and where you are going. Spares may be difficult to obtain in some places but not normally. Different products have different weaknesses so I might bother if there was a good chance of something that mattered failing. As time goes by you may decide to take spares, for piece of mind, but I’d forego such comforts for the sake of payload. Food and wine has a higher priority and is bound to be required.

You could take an umbrella, to be assured of fine weather. Similarly, Sod will ensure that whatever fails will be one of the things you didn’t carry a spare for. Travel light. Getting by is part of the adventure.

if you have a fiat x250 based motorhome, then a spare fuel filter & housing is in my opinion essential. that or the specialist tool and a spare filter and hope and pray that the breakdown mechanic fixes the leak first go. oh did i mention they are a bad design and regularly leak after being serviced?

Later ones with the metal housing are OK, just the plastic ones you need a spare for.

We carry bulbs and fuses and a spare pump for the Alde heating and that's only because I changed it and kept the old one as a spare as it still worked(y)

And 2 gallons of spare fuel:LOL:

A spare wing mirror. We very nearly lost one last year and realised how much inconvenience it would cause to be without one.
We also carry a spare water pump, having had one break before... life in the van is much harder without pumped water.
Extra photocopies of all documents, plus a further back-up in the cloud....

If you have a refillable bottled gas system its always good practice to keep a few spare O rings with your adapters and inspect them regularly for damage before attaching and filling.
They tend to split/perish over time.

Tap connectors, several, 'cos I tend to leave them on taps and other kind people help themselves. Also a water pump, transmitter for wireless headphones, serpentine belt, control unit for Managements lift, bulbs, a roll of gaffer tape I have never used, back and neck heat pads, cafetiere 'cos I break them, fan heater 'cos once one went 'phuttt and enough drugs for Management to open a Pharmacy.

I'd forgotten about medicines.
We always take a good supply of ibuprofen as it's not so readily available abroad. Sometimes paracetamol just isn't enough!

oil, air, diesel, filters, diesel piping, spare set injectors. track rod ends, cv joints, cv rubber boot kits, wipers, bulbs, clutch cable, bottlejack, trolley jack, tools 3 socket sets, . Forgot loads of stuff but it all weighs in excess of 150kgs, lol
For medicine I have 2 plastic 5 litre tubs one for all sorts of stuff I use, ibuprufino, anti-biotics etc; & another for anything the dog might need.
I have ADac but like all insurance I regard its use as the absolute last resort.

All very interesting thanks.

How common is it to carry a spare toilet cassette (more from an extending times between emptying rather than a breakdown!)

I really depends on whether you are likely to need it ... if you go on sites and lot or use aires, you can usually empty it every day/couple of days, but if not then it can be 'interesting' trying to find somewhere to empty it after a few days so a spare is essential, however whilst storing the empty cassette is easy, once its full you might want to think a bit more about where you'd put it.

Interesting question, given that I'm sorting through all the spares I've accumulated over a decade and chucking out all those I never used.

I'd go for:

Wing mirror glass panels
5A fuses for 12v lighter type plugs, and a selection of others
Vehicle fuses
Bulbs for whatever interior lighting you've got
Vehicle spare bulb kit
Mixer tap cartridge
Toilet cassette seal
EHU plugs (male and female)
Digital camera batteries (if not AAA, AA etc)
A spare of anything that sticks out from the side or top of your MH, ie top marker lights, chimney, boiler vent cover. We've lost all of those to foliage at some point.
Did I say wing mirror glass panels?

As for repair kit:

12v soldering iron and solder
Digital multimeter
Duck tape
PVC tape
Araldite
Cable ties of all sizes

..plus the usual common sense tools.
