any recommendations for best technique / software to use for copying my dvds to a hard drive for playing on van TV?

I'm not a very computer literate so this might be total tosh. Can you stick a DVD into your PC and copy it to a USB/memory card then slot this into tv. I know you said hard drive I assume you mean your tv has a hard drive would it be possible to jut do the same.

I use handbrake, compresses DVD as well so it doesn't take up too much room on your hard drive.
I also use DVD shrink, both free programmes.

some modern TV's have a USB or HDMI post, using a media streamer you can connect an external HDD, your computer backup drive or whatever and play the media it contains. film or audio.
