Absolutely do not want a television but would like to watch dvd's on a smallish screen. Is this feasible ? Best brand for DVD player?

We use an old laptop that my mum stopped using when she brought her tablet. It's a 10 year old 15inch Toshiba and we either borrow dvds to play in it or use our memory stick which has all our own films on. If we are given dvds we also copy them to the memory stick so no carrying discs around.

There's bound to be someone you know that's got an old laptop lying around.

A tablet will be best for long battery life, as they don't have moving parts. Downside is, they don't play dvds !
fwiw, we ditched the avtex tv (put a microwave in it's space) and now just use a 17" laptop preloaded with movies to save carrying discs.

Cheap laptop with DVD does what you want and much more. You will need external speakers for decent sound, this also applies to dedicated DVD player.
