after a lovely weekend (apart from sitting in a ten mile tailback at the Dartford crossing) got home parked up, moved my car off the drive to put M/H on ,started up and within seconds could smell diesel, parked up and could see diesel dripping from engine bay. switched off and checked under bonnet and it appeared to be coming from fuel filter. let the old girl cool down and wiped everything clean, started up an hour later and all appears normal, no leaks! could it have just been sitting in the traffic for a couple of hours? any ideas? your thought appreciated.

fractured overflow/return pipe from injectors would be my guess

    Fiat ducato ?

Cracked filter housing, a common fault and not too expensive for a complete new housing.

Cheer PJ I have been doing a bit of searching and found all the threads. do I assume it will start chucking it out once it gets warm as it seems ok at present but I only ran it for 10 minutes?

Dont really know the ins and outs but i would expect heat expansion would cause it.

If its anything like the filter in my car, ( as I found out after I changed it a few weeks ago) it gets very hot after a good run. Don't know where the filter is in the van to check.

Yep agree sounds like fuel filter housing cracked, common on early x250's.

A common issue (happened to me twice) is the fuel filter seal which can leak when hot - this is why it doesn't leak after you stopped for a while. The torque required to screw the top of the housing is quite high and it is easy to crack the housing as well. A lot of threads about leaking X250 fuel filters on here and a lot of advice. Later ones had modified filter design.

My money is on the leaking seal. Cheers

My leaking ones were all black as well. The RAC man in both cases removed the whole filter housing, cleaned it, pointed out the lousy seal design and put it back together, fixing the leak in each case until the Fiat "professional" garage serviced the vehicle - seal started leaking a couple of weeks later in both cases
