hi mate did my back ones last year take hub off jack up. the big nut in center just go a little bit more than finger tight if you go too tight the bearings will seize move wheel up and down and side to side when play stops youl be ok good luck stubby

thats the general idea but its more complicated than that......

the bearings must be torqued to a specific rate, while rotating the hub, then backed off slightly without turning the hub then 'finger' tightened to the nearest split pin hole.

the torque will squeeze any grease from the bearing surfaces and allow proper clearance....this small clearance will then refill with grease as the hub turns......failure to torque the bearing first will allow too much play.

the rears probably are but the fronts wont be.....

the front wheel drive, front hub nuts are usually tightened to well over 100ft lb.

i believe the front bearings are a bit of a weak point on older ducato's.

Your front wheel bearings are of a taper design but not the type your used to
    they are not adjustable
Full strip and a min 10 ton press reqd.
Ok someone will come on and say I knock em in and out with a hammer I hope they have a very big hammer and a good supply of bearings and hubs:Doh:

Totally agree with Geo, did one last week and it took eight Tonnes to push the old outers from the hub carrier.

Thats about the same as lorry wheelnuts - a 180lb man standing on a 2 foot bar?

Agree about the press though. The local garage has a big press and presses bearings in and out for me for a few quid.

Do you think the MOT Tester was maybe over zealous? he said it was really slight .should there be any play at all?

Slight play is normal with all these models, but without seeing it is hard to say what it slight and what is excessive - but compared to a normal vehicle - there is play! I would find it hard to beleive all four are shot!

I would get it checked at a main dealer and get them to state they are fine, or MOT at a citroen/fiat/peugeot specialist that have knowledge of the permitted play.

    Ducato

    Hi
Yes my thoughts are the same, strange all 4 mentioned. also this is the first time i used this testing station for motorhome as he has only just started doing them due to hieght restrictions and only done 2 thousand miles since last MOT and no mention last time, when weather picks up i'll check them for myself and decide if they warrant concern.

and that would carry no weight at all.

the MOT examiner decided it was an advisory and that was his decision....nothing will change that.
and to be honest, for an advisory for a little play aint worth worrying about.

my camry had the same advisory three years running on the same anti-roll bar links....now that tells me its not wear but design clearance.
it was still an advisory though.

same examiner said id need new pads next year (not an advisory...just chatting) on my hilux....we'll see in the next couple of weeks when i do a full service!!!
he did issue an advisory for a nail in a rear tyre though..

I misread the o/p post! I thought it had been failed!

Since it is advisory - don't fret about it! Feel free to mention it to him if you are around his way in a friendly manner, that play is normal on those. I used to work for a citroen dealer, and the vans are all the same - when I first came across it, i considered them dead - then was informed that they all have movement in bearings and kingpins.

He is probabl;y just covering his rear end! Fear not and enjoy another year of camping!

Rear wheel bearings not a big problem, checkand if not showing signs of wear simply repack and adjust. Front wheel bearings should have zero play, that's right none at all! They are pre loaded bearings, yes, taper roller but with a pre determined spacer between the inner races that determines the pre load pressure. Any play and they are on their way to FUBAR so will need to be replaced.
