I couldn't find references to the following issue - does anyone have any insights?

The front pads were replaced between Christmas and the new year. Despite being almost completely worn out the brake pad wear light didn't come on beforehand. A couple of days ago it came on and now lights when we have driven for a few miles - but it is not always on. The brakes seem absolutely fine.

Do I have an iffy sensor or a more significant issue? The van goes in for a service and MoT when we get back to the UK in April, so I'm not inclined to get hysterical unless someone advises otherwise.

The manual specifically refers to front brake pads, so I assume not.

Perhaps it does but for why? if the brakes are working correctly they should all wear equally thus only one sensor.
Mine is an X250

Probably because in my experience (identical system / different vehicle) they are incredibly unreliable - to the point where most people, given a choice, buy non-sensor pads. Either the pads are very close to the metal before the WL comes on (hence the need for both sides of the vehicle) or the wire is cut by rust on the disc edge just before the warning is needed. Checking the pads visually is much more reliable.
