Yes matey
MOT examiner showed me today even though he passed it.
It makes sense really as it is the same side that had a smashed strut top bearing and knackered damping. POT HOLE in France last year. Strut came to light when having new upgraded coil springs fitted.

BTW that is the most expensive ball joint at ÂŁ34 :roflmto: I could have the choice of two at a tenner each :Eeek:

All you actually need is a large hammer.....and hit the end of the swinging arm (not the ball joint).....worked everytime for me for 30 years in the motor trade.

I too have used the "hammer on the end of the arm" for over 30 years but with light commercials I have come across plenty of cases where it just didn't work, by the way I use a three pound copper/hide mallet on copper side rather than an actual hammer. I have a splitter like th one Techno has shown and that, along with a "judicious whack" from the copper mallet has never failed...........................yet.

I'd rather not :Eeek:

Lol...coward..::bigsmile:

I remember coming from college and my forman asked what I'd been doing and I replied "ball joints" so he said right you can go and do that 100 over there it needs them all doing...(in those days you adjusted them with shims) so I asked him where he kept the ball joint splitter and he handed me a 1.5 pound hammer and I looked at him gone out....then he showed me the technique and I never looked back...:thumb::thumb::thumb:

If its a really tight one use 2 hammers in opposite directions at the same time.

Andy on the tool you linked I am guessing the 20-50mm is the Gap from the yolk to the compressing arm if that makes sense so if you measure your new one is that any help?

edit these explain the measurements

Should be the thickness of the suspension arm plus the length of the ball joint thread that protrudes through.

Those type are really for joints that are to be saved/reused.
For knackered ones you can use one of these type

MOT in 2013 said my rear bushes were perished :roflmto: lying tw@t still ok now but he offered to fit new ones for over ÂŁ600 :Eeek:

Hence I found an honest garage this time.

I now use and can't speak highly enough of these peeps

even using a splitter be prepared to use a hammer as well.

The compression splitters dont always pop the joint.

These work every time but do damage the joint so only use if joint to be replaced.

Here is that bad boy :roflmto: He'll be getting Techno'd soon :thumb:
BTW the splitter I bought probably doesnt have a wide enough jaw but I'll file it out. It is 20mm I believe but probably needs to be about 24mm

From memory so I could be off the mark here but the balljoint nut is 24mm AF so the threaded bit will be about 16mm dia? Your splitter with a 20mm jaw width should be ok. When I've had to use mine I generally find that winding a fair bit of pressure on it will not crack the joint but then givng the tail of the splitter a couple of good cracks (think like trying to drive a wedge in) with a 2.5lb copper mallet will break it apart. No wonder my wrists are knackered:cry:.

The ball joint shaft is tapered Dave so on the opposite side of the track control arm to the nut it is very much wider.

Of course I will try it before the need to customise :thumb:
