Brian might have a C1E and no 107 code.. :thumb:

without trawling the net that would have been possible Mo, i think a C pass does clear the 107 code from the C1 licence
but the fourwinds is over 7500kg anyway so it wont apply.
he needs the C licence to drive it anyway.

I wonder how many more poor sods out there that thought like me they were legal.. and read this thread and find out they are "Not".. :whatthe:

Ok`ish,, if nothing happens, but have a prang and you can bet your life the insurance will not pay out,, cos in the eyes of the law you were not legally entitled to drive that particular vehicle..

It`s been an eye opener for me, I can tell you..

sorry mate.....blame DVLA, VOSA and the government.

please...check it out as i could be wrong...but i dont think i, or Olley, are.

DVLA will only tell you what you already know...'rigid LGV with a 750kg trailer'
but ring and ask if the trailers weight has to be gross or kerb.

once you get past the welsh accent they are very friendly. :thumb:::bigsmile:

Thats right Mo, until I take the test or get the B class I cant use the a frame on toad, but ok on trailer since re plate.
This shows the value of MHF we have learned a lot and could have saved helluva lot.
To any Funsters reading this thread , check your licence, vehicle plate , reg doc and trailer or toad weights, you may not be legal
Good ol MHF

thats the only thing putting me off a larger 7.5t+ RV.....well, apart from being skint and not having a C licence that is ....having to take the C test and a second (E) test to tow a car.

im sure there are many C1 holders driving RVs over 7.5t but as you say....insurance will be void in an accident.
the buggers still take your premium though.

the "wrong" licence isnt really an issue as the fine will be relatively low with points but as said...insurance.

C1E (107) and CE (102)

Hi
interesting thread, I dont need to tow anything that big at the moment, I have a KonTiki 645 4500kg and a Smart, am about to buy a trailer for it, it will all be under the present limit, but i was wondering, I have a C1E with the 107 restriction but I also have a CE with a 102 restriction (class 1 but restricted to drawbar trailers), would this cover me for a larger Motorhome and trailer over 750kG, I have looked at the DVLA site but it is all very confusing.
would appreciate some advice from someone in the know.

thanks

Dave

i'd say yes Dave.
an A framed car is a drawbar trailer and you no restrictions on drawbar trailers.

only vehicle train weight and overall legal length (i believe its 18mtrs) apply to you.

Thanks Pappajohn
its such a complicated arrangement isnt it, I have the CE as grandfather rights for having a class 2 HGV licence, so I dont actually know what constitutes a Draw bar trailer as opposed to an ordinary trailer.

Drawbar Trailers.

The drawbar should not be confused with the fifth wheel coupling.

The drawbar requires a trailer which either loads the drawbar lightly (for example a small boat trailer, or caravan, where a load of up to ~50 kg is part of correct trailer loading practice), or the load is the weight of the coupling components only (larger trailers, usually but not always with a steerable hauled axle, front or rear).

By contrast, the fifth wheel is designed to transmit a major proportion of the load's weight to the hauling vehicle.

A drawbar is mounted or located on the tractive vehicle and is used to accept the coupling of the load. The direction of haulage may be push or pull, though pushing tends to be for a pair of ballast tractors working one pulling and the other pushing an exceptional load on a specialist trailer.

Drawbar trailer

It is big, yes, but if you see the wheels are at the back and the front pivot on a pin. The a-frame attaches to the tow vehicle. With this arrangement, there is no real weight on the tow ball as such, in comparison with a normal trailer which 'leans' on the tow ball. I think that is the easiest way of explaining!

As for Brians R/V - Time for a diet, see if you can downgrade the weight!! If it is only half a ton over, you should be able to skinny it down so you can legally drive it! Just get someone else to take it to the station so they don't seize it!

yes i see now, so as pappajohn said a car on an A frame is in effect a drawbar trailer, good news then.
