Based on my not inconsiderable pie experiences over the last few decades I purchased an Iceland "Family" pie yesterday pretty certain that when the box was opened the contents would be smaller than the box suggested and therefore fit in my double skillet easily.

Therefore I was surprised to find it would NOT fit in without modification made to the pastry layout.

It is now cooking over a low flame...

Heeding Pappajohn's warning I have placed my flat toaster thingy on the flame to see if it will work as a defuser thingy...

Glad to see that I'm not the only one with a slightly charred skillet handle...

...although to be honest, one of mine isn't so much charred, as melted enough to stop the button working anymore

(I blame the design...can't be my or JJ's fault )

As you like big pies JJ, should your people not be working on designing a treble skillet?

I cannot believe that you have been 'disloyal' to FB!!!! Disgusting (your action that is, not the FB pie ... well ... maybe both! ::bigsmile: ).

Don't suppose you bought a pack of brillo pads to clean the pan up too did you ... seasoned ... nah, just plain manky!!! :ROFLMAO:

Then again, seeing as you LIKE FB pies I don't suppose the 'contamination' on the pan will make much difference to the taste!!!

I've just looked at the Iceland pie contents and it only has 25% beef in it! :Eeek: Mind you, the FB version only has 25% beef in it too and even this is an improvement on the FB Steak and Kidney pie which contains 12% Beef and 9.5% Pork Kidney ... now I KNOW why I don't like them ... yuk! :shout:

JJ if you eat the whole Iceland Pie (800g) you will consume 1900 calories (245kcal per 100g)! :whatthe:

The FB pies are 'healthier' (if that is the correct term) in that they are around 151kcal per 100g (around 718 kcal for the whole pie).

Realistically ... that's a heck of a lot of calories for a 'cardboard box' with a bit of gravy inside! :ROFLMAO:

JJ I tried cooking one of the famous FB pies in a double skillet; it was a complete failure. Did this pie cook any better, as I would like to cook pies in my ovenless Arto.

C'mon JJ ... are you still ALIVE after stuffing yourself silly with that pie? Did it cook okay in the double skillet? Is it BETTER than the FB ones (surely it must be! ::bigsmile:).

I thought Cock au Vin or Paella was compulsory when with the "romans" not a blooming Iceland pie, I am getting disillusioned with you "old hands". Us learners are expecting better examples of culinary expertise than this, next will be jambon butties a la skillet. :roflmto:

Oh come on Peter, there are simpliest ways to have the above! You surely don't want to upset Elaine and....be banned for ever from JJ's Christmas card list but most of it .... you don't want a Princess's b****y temper to go with :roflmto::roflmto: You have no idea what JJ has to go through (and vice versa :winky:::bigsmile:) to get those meals .... JJ likes plain meals... and to eat my French stuff he has to put a peg on his nose and keep his eyes shut:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Just call in with your dearest OH and let's have a week of typical French meals :thumb::thumb:

On the subject of pies.......I seem to remember that FB pies could be bought for a quid a short time ago.
Now it seems they are a lot more.
As they seem to last a long time Im wondering if we should all be buying them now as an investment.
A bit like a Bitcoin...a currency without a country free from international manipulation of the money markets.........freely tradable but with the benefit that if times get tough you can eat it.

Food for thought

Iceland Pie cooked in double skillet report...

Following advice from Carol and Pappajohn I placed the skillet on top of my flat toaster thingy to act as a flame defuser.

The pastry bottom and sides came out perfectly as did the contents but the top of the pastry remained gooey although hot.

I wondered whether I should try a wide flamed blowtorch on it to try to "brown" it but as that would have entailed finding the equipment I just dug in and scoffed the lot... gooey bits as well... :thumb:

Yummy.

(Deffo felt a tad "green" at the end but a coffee and a couple of Twix bars soon got rid of that. :ROFLMAO:)

I might try a mini flame thrower on my next skillet cooked Fray Bentos Pie. The last one, when cooked, turned out the same... top of pastry not brown.

Mind you, if I get around to sorting my larger whisper quiet, affordable and long lasting Kipor I will be able to use my show bought, 750 watt, electric oven.

Can't you just turn the double skillet over to cook the top?

The pie might get mangled but I doubt that would stop you eating it? :winky:
