Whatever dog you choose make sure that it can actually travel with you.

There are plenty of sites now that have restriction on which dogs they allow on site. Some dont allow German Shepherds and Labradors, some dont allow staffys.

Consider where the dog will sleep and how much room they will have to move around. Perhaps a smaller dog like a bichon frise that doesnt molt may be more suitable for motorhome travel if you are touring long term. Hairs get everywhere

I've seen Bull Terrier restrictions on sites n France, but never GSD or Labrador.

We have a French Bulldog and a Border Collie now, since our old girl sadly went to Rainbow Bridge :Eeek:

The French Bulldog is the funniest, cutest, most comical little thing, plus its feisty and very clever and loves to play. Doesn't need loads of exercise, happy to be with its person. Loves to travel and great all round companion dog. Originally bred from the English White Terrier (a lost breed now) and small English Bulldogs, by the lacemakers of Nottingham, who took them to France when the Lace Workshops were industrialised. They caught rats in the factories and were companion dogs when the lacemakers worked their long shifts, small enough to sleep on your lap and keep you warm! They have some similarities to bull terriers due to their breeding but at least they are very welcome in La Belle France and do not need muzzling!

On the negative side, they are really expensive to buy :whatthe:

Why go for a pedigree? inbreeding causes all sorts of problems look at the aristocracy.

We've got a labradoodle not because they'e fashionable but our son was allergic to the rescue dog we were going to have. He was secondhand with a low mileage and is great, friendly but a bit daft. He even won best in show (scruffiest dog award)

I second a labradoodle, charlie-brown is 3 now, well socialised, well travelled, doesn't shed much, loves everyone + loves other dogs, play and water. Great fun to be with! Although loves cats a bit too much!!!!

+1 for Labs. I'd always go for GSD's but they are too big for many. The Lab would be a great compromise for me. Proper dogs. ::bigsmile: Years ago I had some experience with training labs to detect mines, they were superb dogs, very intelligent, lots of fun. A couple of chocolate ones I remember were super intelligent.
So Fun does have something in common with Facts:Smile:

Border collie of course.Very intelligent and affectionate, everybody's friend. Moults like mad all year round of course and loves water/mud, but we wouldn't swap her for the world.
Loves travel and will travel happily all day (with just a pee stop or two). The passport thingy is no problem, especially if you're travelling for a while (bit awkward for a weekend)

A couple of points come to mind regarding Shifty's dog choice.

It's said that dogs and their owners resemble each other.
Is there a dog that ugly?

Many dog owners say their dogs understand every word they say.
We don't, so what chance does a dog have?

started when I was 11 with my parents-forgot to stop!been real one since 1980!
Years ago My father and I had Labs,as we used to go shooting lovely dogs and my dad was sure they could talk! Only that they had signals when they wanted a feed or go out,or saw something of interest. When I married we didn't have any animals, until my retirement we now have 2 Shi Tzus, perfect for the van, they don't shed, but do need regular grooming.
I was thinking of cross breeding them for new type of designer dogs,you may be interested in the potential strains;
With a Bull dog for a politician=Bullsh*t,or a Jack Russell=Jacksh*t,or a Staff=Toughsh*t.
What do you like Shifty?

Border Terrier of course . Hardy , fit loyal dogs. Our two have only been to the vets for their yearly jabs. Ones 5 the other is nearly 16. Great dogs.

Can just picture shiftzzzy wearing a string vest and back to front baseball hat walking a staffy in one of those leather studded harness leads! :ROFLMAO:

Another vote for a Border Terrier. Tough, loyal, fast, active, sleeps a lot, good at chasing rabbits, cats, birds, leaves, flys, wasps, bees........ And so on!

If you google a breed and stick 'rescue' after it you can find lots of pedigree dogs needing homes. There are also dog charities with pictures of available, often pedigree, dogs, like this site http://www.prodogsdirect.org.uk/. Some lovely dogs on here - love the lurcher.

My son, who knows about these things (ha!) says you need a Tibetan mastiff! Try googling some pictures.

He says that the Chinese had one in a zoo and told visitors that it was a lion until it barked.:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I have only ever had two dogs. One was a golden Labrador the other a German Shepherd. Both bitches.

They are both lovely loyal dogs.

If I had to choose I would go for a lab but only just because Alsatians are lovely too. Ours though had a bit of " attitude" towards other dogs which got her and me into a few fixes. I remember once I took her to Wisemans Bridge and she took umbrage with one of those Dulux dogs. It wasn't pretty:Sad:

we have a cocker spaniel he's done 4, 7 week trips to France. loves to travel in the van and is happy to snooze while we cruzze then if your feeling energetic will walk all day. great temperament, loves people and other dogs, he thinks everyone is his friend.:thumb:

only downside is they molt

so i would recommend a Cockerpoo same temperament and size dont molt.:thumb:

dogs are not so much of a problem in France in bars and bistros everyone we have been too has allowed the dog in:thumb:. UK can be a different matter:Sad:

remember though dogs are mostly not allowed on beaches between 1st May and 30th Sept. dont bother us as we prefer the countryside and walking.

the pics were taken on the Gardon at Pont du Gard

Labradors are great companion dogs. Good size, very intelligent and trainable, love water, walks and retrieving and are generally sociable. Very loyal and if your not feeling very active today will curl up at your feet snoring for hours on end.
Cockapoo does all the above but smaller would be my choice of dog. :thumb:

There is No law to stop dogs going into shops and restaurants in France ...it is up to the owner / proprietor...to refuse and say NO....the wife was just reading about that the other day ::bigsmile:

Staffys - had them all my life and couldn't be without them. All the years I've had them I have NEVER seen one turn a lip up to a human. Our kids were brought up with them and now they have their own places they have them too.
It is true THEY pick their doggy friends and can be a little 'selective' in that area but bring them up right and you couldn't wish for a better friend.
He's here now, head on my lap snoring after his walk and ball fetching.::bigsmile:

Trikeman.:winky:

I`m a newbie, now 1 year
Dave, Daughter is really pleased with their Border Terrier, goes on their boat no problem, happy soul, loves everybody, great temperment.

I have had/have 1 cross breed, 2 Labs, 2 German Shepherds, 2 Yorkshire Terriers, great personallity, a Bearded Collie crossed with a Deer Hound, he was the most suiper dog, another Bearded Collie cross, 2 pedigree Bearded Collies, at the moment, we have A Yorkie, Bearded Collie a rescue and a Brown Bearded Collie girl who is my baby :ROFLMAO:

I prefer Bearded Collies for their love of life and they make everyone smile, very loving, love to be with you no matter where or what you are doing, don`t moult although they take a lot of grooming ,which I love doing, they are mud magnets, not suitable for Dave though.

my choice would be a Lab for Dave, Staffie no way, they are frowned on, maybe nice dogs to their family, we have five opposite to us, they are brilliant with the kids, other dogs no no, no pleasure when out walking with your dog and you have to be always on the lookout for other dogs and keep yours on a lead, which happens a lot when we are out.plus they are not welcome in some places, I wouldn`t want to be restricted where I could take my dog.

A Spaniel lovely dogs, today they were about 20 dogs all different breeds playing together and having a whale of a time. no Staffies, a guy came with one and grabbed his on a lead.
Perhaps a good place is the Dogs Trust, they fit you up with a dog that is suitable for you and your way of life, they are climatised for all situations to see how they react with other dogs, humans, livestock etc health checked, so many sad cases, where perhaps their owner has died or had to go in a home.the dog that chooses you is the one to have.

Good luck,

Margaret
