As I'm off soon, I've just done the usual VDI, other checks and wound up thinking that I'd better have a look at the spare wheel and its tyre pressure. As I've never had it off before (Oh Please :D:D) and I must admit, I've not looked at the manual. I wondered how easy these things come off their mount.

I presume there's a handle somewhere in the vehicle tools that locates into that hard plastic dubree (see pic) which lowers the wheel. What I couldn't figure is where the large spring and nut (see pic) that protrudes through the centre of the wheel comes into play.

Anyone had dealings? Or does one just claim some affliction and let the breakdown crew sort it?

James

I have the same and there is an adapter ( in the tool kit) that fits on the end of the jack handle that fits into the dubree and lowers the wheel to the ground.
Thats as far as I got, sorry. I couldn't figure out how to get the wheel off the lowering mechanism.

Very similar to the Transits I use to have handle then was a folding one with a sqare'ish lug on the end .
Onece down, then on inside of wheel is the hanging bracket and a saftey wingnut .
In your pic's the round plastic bit is the cover for the lowering wire ,I believe .

Unwind the cable its full length,
then drag the wheel from under your van,
its then easy to disconnect from cable.

Thanks guys (and guy-ess) But what about the spring? Looks similar to an old valve spring (see pic 2 on original post). What's the spring for???

I'm not familiar with that system but I expect it is to provide just enough tension on the cable to hold the wheel stationary.

I think the spring acts as a shock absorber while travelling.

James. If you figure out how to get the wheel off once it's down, can you let me know? I remember the scuffed knuckles I got when I tried.....
