Hi all
Just purchased solar panels to fit on rv roof from Maplins, on instructions it states that panels must be disconnected to prevent damage before starting engine due to a possible voltage surge, do you disconnect or switch yours off every time?.

if its a quality panel then it should have a blocking diode to stop reverse current going back into the panel.

no mention of turning it off in my instructions and iv had no problems.

unless your control unit has an on/off switch you cant turn it off without totally disconnecting it anyway.

when you fit it to the roof, cover it with cardboard or something before fitting as it will start to produce leccy as soon as light hits it and the wires will be live.

Hi papa
The panels and controller look good quality but i will check if it has a blocking diode, the controller does have an on / off switch, thanks for the tip, I would probably not have thought about covering the panels while fitting them:Doh::Doh:

hi,
my panel has an on/off switch but it only controls any lights DIRECTLY connected to the controller.
ie: maybe additional cupboard lights for daytime use in dark corners.
i dont use it though.

it should tell you in the spec if its fitted with a diode.
