Hi,
I have a 100w solar panel with a duo 10amp solar controller that charges habitat and van batteries.

Would it damage the controller or anything else, if I disconnected the habitat battery for a few days, but leave the system on, so the van battery keeps a trickle charge. I would insulate the bare cable that connects to the habitat battery whilst it is disconnected.

As long as theres somewhere for the charge to go then it should not be a problem.

The "charge" does not have to go anywhere.
Reconnecting the panels to the controller and batteries must usually be done in the correct sequence however otherwise the controller may think the batteries are 24V instead of 12V. If that happens it can wreck them pretty quickly.
Follow the instructions that came with the controller.

I would disconnect both just to be safe
With our controler you MUST reconnect in correct order
Conect battery first this set voltage to 12 volt
Then connect panels to controler
I had a fuse blow on battery side when replaced fuse panels started charging at 18 volt
Then I read instructions connected back up in order no more problems

On & off, since 1966 - fulltime since 2005
You would be best putting a switch on the lead from the panel before the regulator the you can isolate the panels when you want.

Yes, we've installed a switch between the panels & the controller. This also serves as a visible reminder of the sequence whenever we need to disconnect anything....
