Actually, I've found a chap 25 minutes away who seems unshockable and has a soft spot for lost cause vans at Autolec so I'll see what he can do when I get back from my little jaunt, but thank you so much for your extremely kind offer.

Probably wise. This sort of long distance fault diagnosis is fraught with difficulties. Jiggle on!
