Hi ...does anybody have any info on cruise control in Belgium i.e.: can they be used.
I had a cruise fitted in April this year .....and would be lost without it, it makes driving a pleasure.
a English neighbor has just come over to his cottage and said today ..."Did you know cruise control is not allowed in Belgium" !!!!!....WHAT
Is this true, as I am going to Germany, Holland, Belgium, and possibly Poland in a few weeks time.

    Mel in France

We travel through Belgium on a regular basis to and from Holland.I have seen the signs on the motorway for no cruise but as far as I am aware its only on certain stretches of the motorway,ie around the city ring roads. We use cruise all the time.

and how would anyone know you were using it ?

if, god forbid, you were going to hit something would you not brake so turning it off.

if you got pulled you would turn it off as soon as you braked to pull over.

with a little care anyone can drive at a constant speed on a flat road without cruise control so who could tell it was on.

allegedly speed camera detectors arent permitted in france/spain, cant remember which, but you wouldnt turn off your sat nav 'cos that has speed camera POI's built in., would you.

Ah,but the Belgians are afraid if you brake to hard you will skid through into Holland without spending anything.

    just an observation.....

if everyone had cruise control and had to use it by law then there would be no accidents and no tailbacks....as we all would be travelling at the same constant speed.

yeah right!!!! , maybe in a different world...:RollEyes:

I work in Belgium far too much and can confirm that Cruise isn't permitted on motorways. There are quite a lot of articles in the national press to remind you of traffice laws.

This is not one to worry about too much the traffic police have 3 favourites, as here speeding is number 1 but there is a published tarrif on fines and they start a 3kph over the limit and are on the spot and you will be escorted to a cash pointed if you say you do not have enough money. Second favourite is crossing white lines in the centre of the road, this includes turning into a driveway on the otherside, I can confirm this! Third favourite at least in the French part is they are currently having a clamp down on parking.

I suspect that is the logic behind this. The person using it is slipping into auto pilot mode and if they nod off, instead of altering the throttle which they may notice the vehicle just sails on and crashes.

I heard a story a couple of years ago, and it probably is just a story but it's almost believable.

A solo drive going along a motorway at a nice steady speed with his auto-cruise on was so relaxed that he forgot he was driving and got up to go for a pee. !!!!!!?

Have just been informed by her indoors that its a cunning ploy by the Belgium government to fool you into thinking its big enough to get up to cruising speed. Its a bit like why its compulsery for all Belgian aircraft to emit vapor trails.
