She doesn't know, or can't tell, who it is......... I'm sure the organisers will have a few words.

Hi Puddleduck,

Yes, you're right. I'm probably worn out after the Olympics and World Cup. I should be ashamed really, because my dad (god rest his soul) hails from Maryhill.

Sorry to hear about your daughter. Notwithstanding the no-sho VIP, she must be proud to be chosen. It's quite something to be involved.

Just had a thought , if it's called the Queens remembrancer, will it be stopped if Scotland ops out ? It'll have to be renamed won't it.

I don't think so as there is no intention to depose HM as Head of State. There is no office of Queen's Remembrancer in England after all.

Just to give a few facts:

The free Uni places are funded from The Queen's Remembrancer. When someone in Scotland dies without leaving a will and no entitled relatives can be found or come forward the estate is paid into a ring-fenced fund for educational purposes. In England the estates just go into general treasury funds.

We do pay for dental care.

Prescriptions are free but the number and variety of drugs are far less than that available in England. This is particularly noticeable when it comes to cancer drugs. I was prescribed drugs in an English hospital when receiving treatment there but they were not available in Scotland. It was a very difficult time knowing there were drugs that would keep my illness under control but were not available where I lived. My specialist solved the problem by enrolling me on a research programme but that isn't available to everyone.

No offence meant but I get a bit riled when I hear "You get this and you get that and we pay for it."

Just to add to this, our son and daughter who both went to university in Glasgow are still paying off their student loans. Our son is now 30 and our daughter is 27:)
As for the perceived "free care for the elderly".......we were paying just under a £1000 per month to keep my Mum in a local nursing home before she died.

Scottish students at Scottish Universities do not pay "up front" tuition fees. They still have to pay for accommodation, books, stationery and any specialist course materials just like everyone else - and most take out student loans to do so.

My daughter was on Lewis for a couple of years of her degree and it would (almost) have been cheaper to pay tuition fees than to pay for the travel as she also had to go to Inverness two days a week for one of her modules - 2 return airfares each week.

You truly are a very rich nation, we would have been on ferry and bus, there must have been a cheaper option to travel

Or a closer look at the course before signing up (I now need the old wide eyed smilie to go here)

She had lectures in Lewis in the morning and then had to be in Inverness in the afternoon, back in Lewis the following day. Flying was the only way to do it. Don't think we didn't check, ferry and bus would have been much cheaper. Only two graduated from her course in her year.

Clearly planned by a civil servant
One student from the Lewis base had to go to Orkney one day a week for practical archaeology. That's what happens in remote areas when the students have "interesting" courses.

It's still going on.....

Though it seems more like a charity fund raising gig at the moment than a Sporting event opening ceremony to me....

But thank goodness they finally managed to get the top off the Baton..

Even Her Majesty applauded that... and she's seen a few Batons in her time......

Oh help! It was going ok until they brought the "singers" on, John Barrowman and Karen Dunbar and when did she ever sing? Crikey, is it just us that find it embarrassing? What a turn off(n)
Let's hope the games are better........

That was truly gringey .....after the Olympics I expected better . Had to switch off after Susan Boyle .

It got better...... difficult when expectations were so high and the budget so low.

As I said I was at one of the dress rehearsals and the televised ceremony was far better than the rehearsal.......... except you missed out on the atmosphere in the stadium which was electric even for the rehearsal.

Well I stayed the distance and on the whole enjoyed it. Our budget was never going to match Londons but don't think I enjoyed Londons any better. Would loved to have seen Rab C and Marydoll appear and heard a bit more of the Uist vocalist. :D

Now isn't that a totally sensible idea?

Why did no one in England think to actually identify where unclaimed estates would go? Could be schools, hospitals, Uni places, elderly care, any number of things.

I really wonder what politicians are paid for...
It does go into the general taxation pot, so in a way it does pay for the above, besides,,,
" has used money from people who die without wills or family in Cornwall to fund his own charities and to support bursaries at his old private school in Scotland.
As Duke of Cornwall, a title that already provides him with an £18m private annual income, a quirk of history means Charles becomes the owner of the assets of anyone living in the county who dies "intestate".
Last year that provided him with more than £450,000 and he is sitting on £3.3m in cash from many years of collecting Cornish legacies, latest accounts show.
In 2012, the benevolent fund he set up to use the money made one of its largest grants of £5,000 to the elite public school of Gordonstoun in Scotland where a place now costs £30,000 a year.
The biggest grant was £19,300 to Charles's charity Business in the Community, whose supporters include some of the biggest companies in Britain. Another £1,000 went to his London-based Prince's Foundation for Building Communities, which champions the prince's controversial ideas about architecture and planning."

I thought the start was very Brigadoon but I suppose that is how Scotland portrays itself (or is portrayed) and was almost to be expected...... however the show became better and better as the night went on (my opinion only of course) and I lasted to the end.

Happening just two years after the Olympics and the huge budget attached to the Olympics, Glasgow could never hope to top that but overall it was a good show after the twee opening.

The place to be is Glasgow Green I am told no tickets needed and free events.
