The wartime volunteers arrived at Spean Bridge railway station and were told to make their way to Acknacary where the Commando Courses were held. This was the first test as I believe it was 9 miles away and they were carrying all of their gear.
7 (SPHINX) Commando Battery the Commando Gunners are based at Arbroath and do the 9 mile speed march every Remembrance day.
The origional commandos were drawn from the Army and then the RM's who carry on the traditions They are supported by the Army Logistics Regt, Engineer Regt and Artillery Regt and I served with them for 25 yrs Great times.
Hope someone has a picture of the memorial at Spean Bridge
an Uncle of mine who recently passed away was one of the Army commandos during WW2, never spoke about it much eccept if you specifically asked in private, and was certainly responsible for my interests in the military.
