We are travelling to Italy from Spain in April, probably crossing the border into Italy towards the end of the month.
I would like to avoid the busy coastal motorway and going via Briancon and the Col de Genevre looks reasonable - we did it last year in June. But in late April? It is over 1800m.
I suspect, though the road might be open, snow chains may be mandatory and I'm not going to buy some just to be used once.
I've done a bit of reading and it seems they do keep it open all year round and chains are only needed if it is snowing.
Does anyone have first hand experience of this route early in the year?
