Bought a 5m lead from ebay used it today with my tyre inflator and blew the fuse in the lead.
Upon further inspection the fuse is 5a and my inflator is 15a.

Is it safe just to replace the fuse with a higher amp ie 15a or even 25a or would I be best replacing the lead with one than comes with a higher amp as standard?

Buy a lead rated at the right current.

The fuse in the extension lead is protecting the cable so randomly uprating it without knowing exactly what size the cable is asking for trouble especially if you're talking about x3 or even x5.

As @NickNic said, I had to buy a extension lead for my tyre inflator and I think the fuse is 20 amp, it's really hefty cable.

It's 5m and says 20awg 300w however it's not particularly fat was thinking of just getting a new cable at 15 squid not cheap but cannot reach rear tyres without one.
Atleast you confirmed that's the correct decision.
Will be pointing thus out to dealership when next go back in as gave me a kit I cannot use on rear tyres grrrr.

Lots of 15 amp ones on Amazon.

What's the actual socket fuse though, is that big enough?

A lead with crocodile clips for the starter battery should avoid blowing the dashboard socket fuse.

The Maplin heavy duty tyre inflator did blow that 10A fuse on its first use in my van.

I know my tyre pump (rac 700) blows fuses if I turn it on when fitted to the tyre- under load- but it's ok if I turn it on and then fit to tyre.

IF..the cable spec is correct, which I doubt, it's rated at 25amps......300/12=25.
not that a big cable won't be safe but far far too big for a cig lighter socket which will be rated at either 120w (10a) or 180w (15a)
Also, a long lead with a heavy load simply won't deliver the volts to the compressor.
Mine ran at about half speed under load using a 20ft lead.

Some dashboard sockets are only rated at 10A.
This!
My MH has a dedicated Power-Take off "cigar lighter" socket low on the dash Max 25A.
I found this inconvenient, so equipped my compressor with Alligator clips, which I use to attach to the leisure batteries directly.

In the past, I made the mistake of using the cigar lighter in the rear door of my Lexus and blew the fuse - no, it wasn't the fuse, it was the "fusible link" - not economically repairable!
