It matters!!!! I think they must go off as the crow flies on one of them... Mine was on wrong one and it took me up mountains and over streams and I was often in terrible situations. Then someone altered it for me .. but I can't remember to which one .. suspect I am now on Quickest .. (still few mishaps but not half as many.)

The quickest will take you on motorways, the shortest will take you up cart tracks, on some satnavs, you can get a midway setting something like optimum, but not all.

started in a minivan 1970's when I could fit into it.
There is also an economical setting on a garmin, have to scrol down for it.It seemed to keep me on the main roads through france this time.Only once or twice did it want to take me down a dodgy detour.

On and off for many years.
Mine is set on "easiest" but I always check the route using a road map.

I'm using the iGo software on a tablet.

I think quickest or shortest also takes into account other settings like no tolls, motorways etc that you have opted in or out of so there might be quite a difference between the two.
