Had a run out to my secret spud producer in Goostrey yesterday to check on the date of the gastronomic delight of the first Cheshire new potato.
Was informed that in maybe two weeks I can start my month long feeding frenzy of Cheshire's,broad beans and home cured bacon with the bacon fat poured over.Couldn't wait for this annual culinary delight so bought some of the poor cousins of the Cheshire,namely "Jersey royals" yesterday. What a letdown they were,never again will I be tempted away from the mighty Cheshire.

Cheshire new potatoes are a real delicacy John and must be eaten on the same day they are dug from the ground,unlike the Jersey royals which are not new potatoes as they take a day to reach the market.
We Cheshire lads know whats good to eat.

Snowbird knows what he's talking about - new Cheshires are the most delightful of all new potatoes (Jersey Royals included) and that combination with bacon and broad beans (in my case smothered in fresh parsley sauce) is one of the world's most satisfying culinary experiences.

Sadly, now we've moved to Wiltshire we have to rely on old friends and relatives from Cheshire to keep us supplied.

'Cheshire potatoes' can be any old variety of potato as long as they are grown in Cheshire.

If you find one you really enjoy, it's worth asking for the name of that particular variety, then you can be sure to get the same one in the future.

Its not just any old variety of potato that we grow in Cheshire.

That's why you cant call Cava Champagne.

Any old red wine cannot be called Chateauneuf de Pape.

Any old brandy cannot be called Cognac.

Cheshire spuds are guarded just the same.:thumb:

Both supermarket and greengrocer packed unwashed Jersey Royals have been a big disappoinment this year.

'Cheshire' potatoes will usually be Maris Piper, Maris Bard, Wilja, Arron Pilot or Ulster Sceptre.

Unlike Cava, Champagne or Melton Mowbray pies there is no control over the variety the farmer uses.

'Cheshire potato' really does just mean 'potato grown in Cheshire'!
