Does anyone know if there is an Aire or suitable day time parking place anywhere in Chartres? The campsite closed at the end of October and we really want to go to see the cathedral.

Can't find an aire.

Camper Contact only lists the municipal site. Google not coming up with anything either.

As above, one mention of nearest car park calls it underground, so no good. There aren't actually a lot of car parks. Does the campsite have any parking space outside? Just thought as its closed and maybe has a parking space or 2...
Might be better parking further out and bussing it.

Been to Chartres a couple of times on the motorbike and stayed in the ibis hotel.

But cathedral is beautiful and well worth the effort to visit(y)

We have used the site a couple of time once with the caravan and then with MH as a night stop, although I don't think it's an official Aire if you drive towards the site with the river on your left about 400 meters maybe more before the site is a large layby and both times we've been its had at least 3 MH stay overnight.

This is the only option listed on CC Infos. It is a parking spot where, apparently, overnight stopping is tolerated. Quite a way south of the city centre though.
Here is the entry from CC Infos:

Accès/adresse :
Rue de la Vallée de l'Eure
Parking des Clubs Hippiques
28600 LUISANT

Latitude : (Nord) 48.42142° Décimaux ou 48° 25′ 17′′
Longitude : (Est) 1.48041° Décimaux ou 1° 28′ 49′′

Tarif : Gratuit
Autres informations : Face à l'étang, entre les clubs hippiques.

I believe that when the campsite is closed, people overnight outside the gate.
Otherwise, if you turn right out of the campsite gates and follow the road round to the right, there is a large open air car park at the side of the park. I don't know what it would be like to overnight there, but I imagine that people probably do. It's ideal for daytime parking, though.

Thanks everyone. I think we'll wait until we're here when the campsite is open. Thanks for all the helpful replies. Mags

Nice parking area a few hundred yards down the road from the campsite, right beside the river walk to the town.

Had one for 5 years many moons ago. Now starting again.
We visited Chartres just a few weeks ago.
Cathedral is the only interesting thing in the place unless you like shops. Hundreds of shops selling everything you could want at crazy prices.
They have restored/painted a lot of the interior of the cathedral and are still doing a lot hence sections behind scaffold and sheeting. Awful lighting and little explanation of the mass of sculptures.
Totally disappointing.

Loved Chartres, if you do go, don't miss out the beautiful river walk and the medieval church, St Peter's or similar ? Obvs cathedral itself also incredible. Very pretty little town. We noted that the quiet road in front of the campsite gates would hold a few vans if you got there too late, so maybe worth google earthing it.

Didn't overnight there but this is the only place I have paid for parking in France. Its on the main road through and underneath the Cathedral. however you don't have to pay between 1230 and 1430 so if you bought an hour at 1200 you get til 1500 hrs. Plenty of time to look at the Cathedral and run so dittoing everybody else's opinion on Chartres. I think it was Chartres that had a glass art factory shop. Really nice stuff but very expensive (shock) just behind the Cathedral
