Go past the camp site (Camping Bord d'Eure) and there is a dirt car park where motorhomes have been known to stay overnight. Not an official aire so may be moved on. The camp site is reasonably cheap (ACSI) and has all the usual facilities though not a great site. Handy walk through wood and along the river to city.

Used this twice, First time it was closed (winter) and we overnighted outside the gates. Second time on return, we used the site itself. Nothing special but clean.

9 Rue de Launay, 28000 Chartres, France.

Had one for 5 years many moons ago. Now starting again.
I find Chartres very disappointing. Cathedral is worth visiting but for me that's it.
Half day would be plenty so no need to pitch up for a stopover just a car park for a few hours.
Last time we visited they were still doing restoration so parts not visitable.

We parked for the day on the D7154 - Boulevard du Marechal Foch - just along from Dominos pizza place, then moved for the night to the municipal site which is a fair way out of town and probably the worst site we've ever stayed on! The Cathedral is very impressive but we didn't go into the town.

We like Chartres, and enjoyed the illuminations. A word of caution if you stay at the municipal site - the gates are locked at 10pm. Doesn't leave a lot of time if you want to go up into the town in the evening. We almost got locked out!

Just thought; it's quite uphill with steps from where we parked to the Cathedral, probably no good for you Garry.

We stayed for the day and overnight on Boulevard du Maréchal Foch, next to the river, (l'Eure). Under the trees. It is pay & display during the day but was not charged overnight. Not sure if it was strictly kosher, but there were a couple of other MHs parked up overnight in company.
I quite liked the town and the Cathedral was spectacular. The walk from the river up to the Cathedral is quite steep but well worth it.

Stopped at Bonneval a couple of nights ago.
Very nice free aire on the edge of a lovely old town and just a few miles south of Chartres on the N10.
If you wanted to just spend an hour or two to see the cathedral it would make a good stopover.
There was a travelling fair taking up half the car park this week so spaces were very tight during the day. When the cars moved off in the evening there was plenty of room.

We parked here and walked up to the cathedral. you really dont need need more than 2 or 3 hours to look around (IMHO) remember that they dont charge you 1230 -1430 so you could easily get it done for an hours parking

Hi Richard, wondered where you got to, how was the south? Did you stay at Medes the whole time or did you go further down...:)

Stayed at Medes as we only had a short time and didn't want a longer drive south.
Once the weather settled down it was very pleasant, chilly at night but warm during the day.

Left Spain on Sunday and been drifting north in lovely sunny weather. Now at La Mailleraye and home on Saturday.
