I noticed when we where in France and Belgium in April that they didn't have cats eyes on the roads, are they just a UK thing?

They are being removed from roads around here, I asked a road worker today & he said it's an EU directive & they are being phased out!

He is incorrect. It's a government decision to phase out the old technology. They are being replaced in a lot of places with "solar studs" LED lights that you can see far better than the old cats eyes.
Lots of new led studs were fitted in the M20 and A2 approaching Dover a while ago, they are a vast improvement, until they started failing......

Never mind European cats eyes. The white line paint they use must be made from whitewash. Its rubbish compared with the stuff they use in the UK.

the new line paint includes glass crystals too so it reflects any light

Whereas French white line paint seems to be anti reflective!

Yes same here. My wife always comments on it . It becomes even worse & disappears completely when it rains

The ones on the A2 from Canterbury to Dover are a very good idea, I put the lights out on a dark bit with no traffic and you can see the road without any difficulty, Only trouble is that they do tend to go wrong and then ignored. Pity they WILL not make the last bit of the A2 into a dual carriageway, as it is to persuade traffic to go down the A20. Which now has the stupid 40mph limit on it from Folkestone.
There are talks of the limit being mad a variable one instead of a money trap when it is not needed because, it only catches UK drivers the foreign lorries go free of fines, as it is too dear to chase them up..

I have noticed the poor quality of European white line paint for some years. It resembles household emulsion paint regardless of what country you are travelling in. The paint used in the UK is I believe made from plastic granules and of much better quality. Its a pity our roads are not up to the same standard as the roads in Europe. Maybe we are spending to much money on paint quality, and not enough on tarmac.

Our road structure and furniture has been neglected for too long and now repair and infrastructure costs are toooooo high to progress with any speed.

We noticed this ourselves on our last trip, the consensus was that they have so many miles of roads to paint they must water it down.

We came across a road in Pamplona with traffic lights but No road markings at all, they weren't worn out, there just weren't any painted on the road at all.

Nearly got caught out at both of them. :banghead:
