You need C1E to pull bigger trailers, which I have. Allows you to pull trailers over 750kg but not exceeding the weight of the vehicle, and max combined weight of 12,000kg (y)
I also have C1E.
12000kg only applies if you took a C1E test after 1997.....12000kg doesnt apply to pre 1997 grandfather rights licence....750kg trailer is the absolute limit

So anyone using grandfather rights to drag a toad over 750kg on a MH weighing over 3500kg is unlicensed...

HI surely if you tow a trailer then you are adding weight to the rear of van (nose weight) but a a frame dose not as all weight a is supported by the tow car so shuldnt limits be higher ,just a thought

Almost a Newbie but not quite now.
As this is part of the Thread: I have just read in C&CC magazine that DfT are stating not to tow an A frame on the continent as it is illegal. That will sort out alot of the problems

So what you are saying is that if I am running below my gross wt. the amount I can tow increases upto my max train wt. ? provided no axle excedes its limit which was my original question.

that's it yes

Simple answer yes/no.
If we were to trawl thro every licence category/construction and use regulations we would A die of old age B lose the will to live.
My van has a GVW of 3500kg, but I think from memory ( vans in storage) a MAM of 4600kg so as you can see I am under on both counts ,ALLWAYS run your van over a weightbridge.

Nose weight of trailor, generally speaking it must not exceed 50kg, but , the coupling hitch should be no higher than 13 inches in old money 330mm in new :france:from the ground.

Many thanks for all the replies.

I recently attended a speed awareness course given by North Wales Police were we were catorgarically told that you needed grandfather rights to tow a trailer heavier than 750.

I would have liked a 4x4 because I live at the end of a 2 mile single track dead end lane 1,200ft up a mountain in Mid Wales, but maybe it is impracitical as a toad.

The idea of towing a caravan and having to stick to campsites would be a nightmare for me, so I wouldn't be going down that route:)thank you.

I had thought of 4x4 for the snow at home and the Piste (unsurfaced roads in Morocco)

But thanks all for your contributions again.:)

Cheers Dick

Or take a B+E test if under 3500kg or a C1+E test if over 3500kg.

C1+E test restricts you to 12000kg maximum.
B+E has no upper limit for trailer weight except your plated train weight.
You can tow heavy trailers over 750kg on a B (car) licence providing the combined gross weight does not exceed 3500kg or the cars train weight.. ie: 2000kgs car plus 1500kg trailer...but the laden trailer cannot weigh more than the cars unladen weight

VWAlan gave an example of this heavy trailer using a B+E licence....
A mitsubushi canter with a gross of 6500kg and a train weight of 11000kg.
Downgrade the truck to 3500kg (just about enough for passengers and fuel) and it can tow a 7500kg trailer.
The gross weight is reduced but the train weight remains unchanged.
