Hi, I am wanting to carpet my motorhome because at the moment there is only carpet in the front cab.I wont want it fitted because having a dog may require more cleaning and I will take it out clean when need to. I have an off cut piece of hessian backed carpet. Do I need any underlay and can anyone recommend a company that can bind the edges.

On our last MH (and will be on our new one) we used the large carpet tiles and they were brilliant can be easily cut to shape and if you get a stain on any very easy to replace.

Colyboy

Ps try shop fitters they have normally have odd ones left over from shop fits i am sure you will not need many. Price anything between £2 to £5 each about 18" x 18"

We had ours fine. Made to measure but loose and fully bonded. Gives it an expensive and lush feel. Although we measured it, I decided to take it to the carpet place and they measured it mire exact. Unfortunately, it's in Bolton which is a little trot too much I fear. Good luck

Look in your local trade directory (yellow pages?) for carpet fitters. They will cut the carpet to fit, and will know of local tradesmen who do the 'whipping' of the edges.

You won't need underlay, but you might need something to stop the carpet sliding on the Moho floor. Again, your fitter will advise, but you probably need a few puffs of spray adhesive to keep it in place.

Thanks folks, will contact a local carpet fitter to cut the carpet for me and see if he knows someone that can do the 'whipping' of the edges. I asked at 2 local carpet shops for the costs to complete the 'whipping' and one wants £8 per linear mitre and the other £10.

Going via a shop will always be more expensive, as they want to add their cut, too! Specialists charge as little as £3 per meter, and your fitter should be able to point you at a local resource, without wanting a surcharge! Otherwise, look online, but you may end up paying carriage charges!!

Good luck!

To stop the carpet slipping on the floor we bought some of that non-slip matting stuff from the pound shop and cut it loosely to fit, just laid it down and it works a treat.

The stuff you put in cupboards to stop stuff sliding works too!, When we sold the R-V we had ton`s of it left over, and used it up under the mats in the Caravan, The carpet tiles in the Motorhome dont slide anyway.

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
It was easier than we thought. Ralph cut a template . Went to a local carpet shop. They cut a length of carpet which would fit the templates on. Ralph cut out the carpet pieces. Took them Back to the shop , who sent them to be whip stitched. That cost £1 a yard on top of the price of the carpet. It wasn't a cheap fix . But it's finished Pug off nicely.
We were told any carpet shop has acces to a whip stitcher btw. Something we didn't know.

Search the internet for gel carpets. They are gel backed and are very hard wearing and can be cut to shape with a stanley knife and do not fray and do not need to have the cut edges bound. Our new Hymer came with carpets. Took them out, used them as templates for cutting the gel carpets and then put the Hymer ones in the loft. They will come out again we come to sell the motorhome. Cost about £60 for a bit that did the whole motorhome including the cab. The company we bought them from sent us free colour samples of a couple of types before we ordered.

We did the same as Peter used Gel Backed carpet in current and last van, cut mine with big scissors. Cheap enough to replace every few years if needed.

I use large dirt grabber rugs, one very large one which I cut to size so it fits tightly for winter, and some separate smaller rugs for summer as they can be taken out and shaken to get the sand etc out of them off our dogs!

If need be though in future I'd certainly consider the gel backed carpets instead:

That was not the stuff I used. I would not want that pattern. The stuff I got was more lLink Removed. But I found it was cheaper to buy direct rather than from fleabay or Amazon.
The one I gave was just an example ... personally I wouldn't want the one you've used but obviously we can all choose what we like. :)

Can't why think why any of you would actually want carpet in a motorhome, particularly with pets. Ours came out of our brand-new motorhome on day one and won't go back in until we sell it. Much easier to wipe the floor clean than it is to clean a carpet.

Ah but, our dogs don't like lying on a hard floor and I don't like walking on it ... but the worst part is in the middle of the night when the dogs get up to go for a drink and all we hear is the pitter patter of their nails on the 'lino' ... drives us nuts!!!

I agree in principle but with all the grit and sand we tread in it protects the vinyl floor from damage. The carpets manufacturers supply are useless heavy thick loop pile last thing you want in a van. Simple answer if you don't like them don't order them, can't see the point of spending £300 on carpets to put in the loft.:D2

Our last Brand new Motorhome came with no carpets.

We made cardboard templets, bought some expensive anti-slip carpet from Carpet Right, cut them out and got them bound /whipped around the edge.

Total cost was under £175

They were so good, the new owner who works for a large motorhome dealer thought they were factory made!

We never use the supplied carpets as they are totally impractical ... who wants a cream/beige carpet in a MH!!!! If they come as standard in the price (which most do) then they just get stuck in the spare bedroom under the bed with all the other sundry bits we removed (extra bed making cushions etc) until it comes to selling, a fair few foreign ones don't come with them now so if you want them you buy them, but if not you don't have to pay for the privilege of storing them!

I went for the same company as Lenny. In fact I think I got the idea from him in the first place. They have more than 2 grades if you scroll through, but we just looked at the first 2.

I got them to send me a couple of samples, one from each of the first two grades on their website. We preferred the more expensive one and so bought the Beige Primavera. The roll is 2m wide and I think we bought 4m of it so 8sm, which cost just under £56. Did the whole motorhome with that but we have a raised section at the rear over the garage where the twin beds are. You may need more or less depending upon size and layout.

Edit - we may have had the darker brown one in the Primavera range now I think about it

What a very useful and practical thread this is. I will now take the original van carpets to a store selling off-cuts and use them as templates. Getting them whipped may not prove that simple, as we were told the equipment is expensive, but patience should win out.

If you buy gel carpets you do not need to have them whipped or edged. They do not fray on cut edges, or at least the one I bought didn't. But they may not suit everybody - they are very hard wearing but not exactly "luxury". I could have bought gel from the my local carpet supplier but it was much cheaper on line.
