Not about wild or free camping for me Roy.

On the contrary I'm more than happy to pay for an aire where I want to be even if there are cheaper options. I'll just give one example: the aire at Bruges is tarmac, just a car park, although it does have water, and electric if you need it, and you don't have much space apart from in a couple of the spaces. This aire is more expensive than the Asci camp site in Bruges. It's more expensive than Parc Verger where we are now come to that.

It would always be my first choice though when visiting Bruges purely for the location, 10 minutes gentle stroll from the middle of the town whereas the Asci site is several miles out.
Nick I hear what you are saying ,and I shall be seeing what you are on about as I will be mooching my weary way,end of this month for 8 days to the twin lakes meet .however I will be in company with another funster which not only gives me more confidence but also a bit more security on the trip, being a solo motorhomer security is always in the forefront of my mind..Roy

I understand what you mean about feeling safe but one good thing about aires is that if you're uncomfortable you can move on knowing that there will be another one 10 minutes down the road.

This is the first time in France we've ever been on a site, we've always used aires before tonight and only ever felt the need to move on once and to be fair that was because the info in the book was out of date and the place we went to was shut down.

Our experience has been that aires are a very friendly and social way of overnighting. Almost everyone at least says hello and many will stop for a chat no matter what nationality they are.

Security wise you don't need to do anything different to what you normally would - make sure your doors and windows are shut and locked and use your alarm if you normally would at night.

I don't even think the number of other vans around makes much difference. We were on our own on a little village aire last night and felt fine.

I'm a newbie
Caravan Club sites are good from the ones i have been too
I don't have an issue paying £30 a night if its nice site.
Everyone has a choice went to a really nice one in the new forest last year and Grafham Water site is great one 60 mins from me.
This is 2016 not 1990 things cost more today everything has gone up.
I have never had heard anyone moaning about the cost or facilities when i been on their sites.
I know some people spend one night at fill up charge and empty if they are staying at cheaper sites.
I have the bonus of getting discount on my Van insurance so been a member saves us money and we get a free membership to boot.
If you have a dog they normally cater for them as well.
I must have been to 20 plus sites not had a bad one yet.

An update from Ferry Meadows where I happen to be at the moment to meet family. I arrive on site around 5.30 and as I drive very slowly around towards my pitch on the one way system I am forced to look about with extreme care to avoid the hoards, and I don't exaggerate, hoards of children aged I suppose from 5 upwards who are riding bikes I'm front of and around our progressing Motorhome, obviously the one way does not apply to them and neither does common sense. They are riding as fast as they can in any and every direction totally heedless that they are on a road, then BANG on the side of the Motorhome so I get out to find a lad has just kicked his football at us, even though he saw us coming. Fortunately no damage but it was a close thing. Now I am sitting watching a group of around twelve youngsters playing a game of running around the toilet block screaming for all they are worth.

Seems to me the place if full if undisciplined kids who's parents either do not know or don't care what they are doing, what danger they put themselves in or what inconvenience they might cause others. Wardens of course are walking around but doing sweet FA about it.

The former doesn't matter (sooner their sort removed from the gene pool the better) but the latter does particularly when I'm an other.

Oh the joys of taking holidays at the same time as the masses.

It's the summer holidays fergodsake. Since time began children have run around like maniacs during the summer holidays. (Dutch anklebiters do it better imho) What grinches.
There are plenty of adult only sites dotted around.
I am genuinely laughing at people complaining about noisy kids on campsites during the summer holidays.
Thank your lucky stars you're not on a park resorts site!

Getting better month by month.
Adult only.. Each and every time. I have even stopped going to The New Forest Sites during the weekdays this time of year unless they have no facilities as you tend to get less kids then.

I don't think that the complaint was as much to do with noise as the lack of consideration by the parents for what their kids are doing and the lack of action by the wardens.

Campsites hey!

Surely if "hordes" of youngsters are charging around having fun on their holidays, with the warden not thinking they are breaking any rules, it would be undemocratic for them to be stopped from doing so because one couple don't like it?

Just saying...

I guess that having kids kick footballs against your van or running in front of your moving van isn't an issue?

I understand that Ferry Meadows had rules that prohibited ball games on site pitches and that parents are responsible for keeping their kids under control. It looks like this didn't happen and the wardens didn't enforce their rules. It would be ironic if they got stroppy about parking against the white post when the rest of the rules are ignored, wouldn't it?

We like CC sites.. never been on a bad one or had a bad warden... but prefer the informality of CLs..

Me neither. I think a lot has to do with the attitude of the client as much as the campsite staff. We always try to start with a smile and good humour, despite the journey from hell to arrive at the site. Good attitude is almost always reciprocated

One reason why adult only sites are a good idea at some times of the year. However, with probably only a couple of campsite staff on duty, it must be really hard to "police" a site to stop kids playing like this - something we all did ourselves when the same age

All you have to do is walk down the office and report that kids are playing ball games around your pitch Im sure there is a rule where all kids have to be supervised on site .

Not that bothered about the kids its the speed of cars and motorhomes go on site that bugs me.

Im sure it was a caravan club site that a child got knocked off his bike and killed.

I remember my summer holidays, what a riot they were. Punctuated by miserable old geezers who wouldn't give us our ball back :)
brings back memories.. mostly happy ones..

I remember one time I was flying a toy glider, powered by a rubber band.. it went much further than I anticipated and did perfect landing on top of an old geezers caravan.. he came out and went berserk .. ranting and raving.. It was a balsa wood glider so no way did it cause harm.. the wings fell off when it landed.. I ran away and told my dad who recovered it..

we were all kids at one time.. no excuse for playing ball on someone else pitch or near them.. but without kids enjoying camping we won't have a future generation of miserable old geezers complaining about kids.... it's called karma

That's why I dislike campsites...

Too many grumpy old folk want to stop me enjoying myself... ;)

JJ

PS. Was the lad who kicked the ball against your van wearing a red football shirt? If he was, it was an accident. Players wearing red aren't skilled enough to hit the side of a van on purpose...

In fact, the wardens obviously cannot be arsed to try to her parents to have some control over their little darlings or ask for CX rules to be observed. Of course I think it's great that kids on holiday should have a great time, but in safety and not to the detriment of others. Actually because of the number of kids I expect the wardens have given up trying.

I wonder what the parents reactions would be if some peodo asked one of the little girls or boys visiting the toilet lock alone or riding around unsupervised to come and see a puppy in the woods. Or heard an ambulance siren only to find that their kid was under a a vehicle. I suppose it would all be someone else's fault.

I wonder how contributors with, shall I call it a more relaxed outlook, might react if a football hit the side of their Motorhome or worse came through a window.

Just sayin

I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
School summer holidays is defo not the best time to use popular sites if you want peace & quiet - we favour CL's at this time of year. As to adult only sites yes we have been to a few and they were by and large OK.

However for old farts like us (me & her) it is sometimes quite nice to hear the sound of kids running around and enjoying themselves in the fresh air!! :) and yes we have also had kids footballs (usually plastic) hit our van on more than one occasion as well as little ones running through our pitch and even under our awning! but hey ho kids will be kids - I wish I could wind the clock back to when our kids (or even our grandkids) were young!!

Having said that I do expect parents to have a modicum of control over their offspring!!

Yes the child was killed in York, Rowntree Park..........that was the day after Robert told the warden (on a C&CC site Keswick) that instead of checking us & our perfectly behaved dog out & being snotty about it, that she should pay more attention to the kids riding bikes at breakneck speeds AGAINST the one way system!
Yes parents, sorry but you do have a duty to make sure your children are SAFE :wait: and also NOT bouncing balls off of other peoples motorhomes/caravans :madder:.......then we can all be happy.:roflmto:

New to motorhomes, 40 years caravanning...
I remember the Morvich CC site as a lad - stayed in the big grass area down the bottom, and we put up our badminton net as a permanent fixture for the week in the middle. Everyone sat outside in the midges, and socialised :)

Went there last month in the van, and it's all hard standings, one way, park-to-the-peg, and the vast majority were anti-social bar-stewards who sit in their van watching telly all night.

Still - you know what you're getting on a CC site, but CLs and wild camping are much, much more fun!

The good thing about CC sites is the online booking and availability check. Saves loads of phone calls.
We have used Chirk, Dunnett Bay, Southport and Start Bay this year.
The wardens on all sites have been friendly and helpful.
I like the peg rule because it means my neighbour has to stay a good distance away from me.
