WD40 is not really suitable for the step. I would use spray grease as it will lubricate for longer. WD40 is not a good long term lubricant.

Agree with comments on WD40

As for bike chain lubricant there are several different types but the are often desgned not to drip....so I think they would be fine,You only need a little
and wipe off any excess.
