We've just started our first trip to southern Spain and expecting to be away about 10 weeks. We're in Peniscola now and will be bimbling down to Benidorm and beyond.

I'm sure this question has been asked before but for simplicity, does someone have a moment to advise if we can pick up a cheap freestanding sat dish locally that would enable us to watch maybe a handful of British programmes? Don't want to rely on WiFi or MiFi.

We're also being advised that most of the campsites south of here (Benicassim etc) are full. We prefer camperstops in any case, if possible, but naysayers are warning they're not safe!

You can probably buy a dish quite easily. I used to see them in large supermarkets in France and there might be small specialist shops as well.

This guy who is on motorhomefacts.com is on your route south, near Valencia. Give him a ring, I am sure he will sort it out for you.

I think you will find he's also on the Fun side. Maybe on later.

Look in local free papers, all the sat guys advertise in there.

I think you will find it very difficult to get a reasonable signal down in southern Spain unless you've got a 6ft diameter dish. If you go on a Spanish site many have a hook up system available. make sure you carry some cable with you c/w connectors.

We bought a 1.1m dish in Calpe last year for about £60 - you can hire them as well from the same place. I forget the name but if they sell them someone in Benidorm will. We got all stations inc BBC & ITV via sky. I can find out the address if you want it.

UK TV is available in Spain via satellite.
But a lot depends wher in Spain you area, what sized dish you have, and what channels you want to watch.
For example most of the Sky pay channels are available across most of Spain on a smallish 80cm to 100 cm satellite dish.

However, most people want the non Sky, free UK channels like BBC and ITV, which is where it gets interesting.
Valencia and Costa Blanca North you require a dish of at least 90-100cm - with some very good fine tuning.
Anything less in this area will work, but may not be a stable signals.
(For example I get most on my 80x85cm dish, with virtually no margin for rain or cloud or dish wobble)

From Valencia moving north, the signals for BBC / ITV weaken, so much that by Tarragona you need about a 1.8m dish, and then in Barcelona you need a 2.4m+ dish.
From Valencia moving South, around the Torrevieja area to Murcia a 125x135cm dish is needed, then in east Almeria a 1.8m dish, and to west Almeria a 2.4m dish, and then in the Costa del Sol, about a 4m+ dish.

If you want just a few news and music channels, maybe a 60cm dish aligned to Astra 1 at 19 east... you also get German Eurosport free to air, which is also showing the tennis from Australia! Or if you do not mind hard coded Arabic subtitles, an 80cm dish aligned to BAdr 26E or Nilesat 7 West gets you a lot of channels that carry English language movies and programmes

So like I said, depends what channels you want and where.

Many installers don't rent systems out, but you usually find someone on the sites that "knows someone" who has a spare dish...

Thanks for all replies. We don't want to hire as we'd want to use it wherever we go, France etc.

Yes @Satandpcguy we'd like free BBC and itv! We're not huge TV watchers and we don't do sport. Maybe we could get by with 60cm. We may drop by on our way through.

Doubtful you will get bbc on a 60cm dish at all anywhere in Spain (not even half way down france!) - like I said my 80x85 just about gets it with no margin for anything, so the dish you need depends exact where you are going, and what kind of stability you want in your signal....Benidorm just about gets away with a 110x120cm dish...you may be able to get away with a 100x110 at the expense of bbc and ITV HD channels....

We can get all UK channels on an 85cm Oyster (self seeking) dish and Freeview box as far as the SW coast of France (Capbretton Aire) but loose it all as soon as we cross the Pyrenees into Spain.

Currently in Pena Francia (Not France) near Salamanca, Spain. Its cloudy, getting dark.
I have a well tuned Oyster 85cm. I have access to all BBC including regions, all ITV, Chn 4 & 5 and plus 1 channels. Even back at base (Murcia) I can get chn 4 & 5 on this set up.
