Hi

Off to france in four weeks time should we get the camper van weighed before we go as we have heard that the French police can pull you over and if you haven't proof of your weight this can cause problems, anyone got any experience of this.
Thanks

Samany

its possible every where you go .prime targets coming back from dover heading towards london regular pulls. best chuck everything in then use a weighbridge then you know. dont forget coming home becarefull with the beer and wine. it all mounts up. better to empty water tanks if in doubt before you get stopped. too late if you are.
entering switzerland can be another weight problem area.
if in doubt buy a small trailer .
cheers alan.

no truth whatever

but they have had enough of overweight motorhomes [ and caravans ] , and are now regularly pulling them over and weighing

up to 5 % over is just an on the spot fine , beyond that it gets serious

so maybe a visit to the weighbridge when fully loaded for the trip would be a good idea ....total weight and axle weights

short circuit , is that automatic and free ? and can you do the axle loads which have become critical ?

You just drive up to what looks like a bridge, stop at machine and collect ticket which is free but you do not get axle weights

Just to answer the original question, yes, the French Police do pull you over, they then use two portable weighing pads to check front and back axle weights. They are doing it all over but mainly on the main roads. They also check your papers, tyres, and anything else they can think of.

If you are legal there is no problem and they are very polite.

If you are not legal it's a fine and you pay there and then.

I have been stopped once by the Police for weighing and once by the Customs Police who were looking for drugs I think, they didn't find them.
