can vary with year but on average it should be around 70,000mls or 5 years...whichever comes first.

at 18500mls i wouldnt worry for a while but at 5 years its definately advisable.
an engine rebuilt after belt failure could be around £1300 to £1500 depending on severity.

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
Our is a 2006. It had 13k on when we bought last Nov , it its got 17k now. So its used more often, now we have it .
The previous owners used it for holidays in France and Italy.
We got cam belt and tensioners done last week.
Heard of too many disasters when they go bang. It wasn't bad when they removed it. But we did it for our piece of mind.
We haven't been out of the country yet in ours , just using it in GB but id hate a disaster like the cam belt go, abroad.
Its not an expensive job to do, but as Pappa says , it is if it goes.:thumb:

I was in my local garage yesterday with our car, and I asked them about Boxer cam belts as ours is five years old and has done 16000 miles. They had a look in their cam belt bible and it says 72000 miles or ten years. I don't know what to do now as ten years seems a long time.

Trust me,. I am no mechanic and have abosloutly nothing to lose by saying so. But I would never ever ever leave a cambelt for 10 years. 5 years maximum for me. Im sure 1 of our resident mechanics will come back soon either Geo or Pappajohn. I do all my own service work other than a cam belt. It cost around hte £250 mark to change it and yet without it the bill can easily run in to £1000s, for a failure.
Take my advice, find a decent mechanic, get it done properly..:thumb:

Manufacturers are stretching the change periods on a regular basis 10 years is quite common now on quite a few vehicles:Eeek:
In my opinion the makers are gambling with your money
but I make a living out of fitting belts so i would say that:Doh:
But think on

I make a damn sight more out of belt failures ::bigsmile:
as a rule of thumb the cost of belt and pully replacement is 10% of the cost of belt failure

My Inbuilt Bible says 50K or Five years absolute max sooner if prefered straight away if you have no vehicle history prooving a belt change:thumb:

Many motorhomes are sold with a warranty, most if not all require the belt to be changed beforehand over regardless of mileage or years in use
the warranty companies are not stupid:RollEyes:

Looks like a cam belt change for me then, thought ten years was a bit long. But he showed me the book. I suppose different after market makers have different change intervals. But your right for peace of mind I will get it done.

I eventually got round to getting a quote ,phoned the main Peugeot dealer ,left my number with them and they didn't even bother to call back. So I googled it and found www.autorepaircentre.com ,left my number and was called back by a Mobile cam belt specialist who quoted me £ 115 for belt ,pulleys fitted.Does this sound like a good deal and is there anything I should be wary of ?

they must be fitting it for free then as the belt kit will be well over £100 retail.

mine, for the fiat ducato, was £82 trade....belt, tensioner and idler pulley, and that wasnt OE parts.

ask him where he gets his belts and country of manufacture....bet they're chinese.

I have no axe to grind, and as I no longer own a garage I am not looking for work.

I have seen so many bodged jobs done by so called discount centres, one of the biggest culprits sell tyres exhausts shockers etc, and will do their best into scaring you into buying what is not needed.

The best advice is to find a local garage with a good reputation that if something does go wrong (which is less likely) you can go back and they will put it right with an apology.

Just ask any Mechanic on here and they will tell you the same I am sure.

All the best Rick.

I woud have to agree, when ours had the 'problem with cam belt'' the difference in what all the 'mechanics' (loose term) said was immense. You need to find someone you can trust and who knows about doing this job right.

If in doubt ask them questions you may not know much about engines as we didn't but it doesn't hurt to learn a bit as you go along like we did. Have to say hubby retained more of the info than I did but it gives you the confidence for further down the line. You will be paying good money for a job so if they don't seem interested in telling you what they are doing then I would be a bit hesitant on trusting them to do a good job. :thumb:

Poppys, PM me if you want to use our recommended garage and I will give you their number. They do all our hire vehicles, prices are good etc - will even get it done under our name if you like as we get trade price.

£165-195 is our usual price to include tensioners, belt and water pump. Turnaround is a day.

The local diesel specialist garage owner told me a while ago he had just repaired a transit they had done the belt on a few weeks before, he said he used good quality parts and the belt snapped ,the parts manufacturer was footing the bill and he repaired his customers van with no quible and a free service and apology. he says the job was done properly but the belt must have been substandard (Ford supplied kit) and they have since stumped up the full cost.Go somewhere with a good reputation locally then if you have a problem they will sort it out for you,the above garage is not the cheapest but has a good reputation as when on the odd occasion things go wrong they then go the extra mile to make sure you are happy that is why they have been in business for years
