My 54 2.3 Fiat Ducato based Ace is due a hab check , service and MOT, booked in for this coming week. 34K miles, but as far as I can tell has not had a new cam belt. I am guessing this is advisable, given age, but despite low mileage? Whats a ball park cost figure I should look at for this please?

sorry.. no idea mine was done as part of the service when I bought the van from Becks.. IIRC it is a 5 year service interval for the belt..irrespective of miles. .. the new belt should also have a new tension pulley .. a new water pump is also an option..

    I'm guessing around £250 - £300 ?

In saying that.. if you go the dealer who quoted £300 to change a gas regulator.. could be several grand :eek:

Usually there is a specified time as well as mileage specification. Look at the cost of a new engine v the cost of a timing belt and then it makes sense even if the water pump is not showing any signs of leaking it will have done service and therefore while it is stripped down will be worth the extra cost as
it will need stripping down as for cam belt to do the water pump.

I would certainly be looking at getting the belt replaced, the parts usually come as a kit, ie belt water pump and tensioner wheel. Do the whole lot in one go, to do each separately is a false economy.
You will then know it has been done, and you have peace of mind.

Ours was done when we bought it from Edgehill motorhomes in Mansfield. It had only 25k miles on at the time but their policy (like Jim's dealer by the sound of it) is to change it at 5 years even if low mileage. Our next one is due in November 2016. Gary

On the 2.3 the cambelt also drives the water pump so it is advisable to replace that at the same time, usual cost is around £450 inc VAT.

We got our belt changed a few months ago for just under £300 from a local garage using recommended Fiat belt. Dealership was asking £540

As the above advice really is a must to do the cam belt.

Had to get Diane's Volvo belt done not because of mileage but of its age.

But if the belt broke what chance of getting a secondhand 2ltr engine with 8000 miles on the

I changed mine with pump bought as a kit for about £80 also you need the locking tools about£20 quite a job as you have to remove half the o/s fittings to get at it, about four hours work so expect a bill between 3 to 5 hundred pounds
