More to the point, does anybody still use them????
I had one as a kid back in 81 and loved it. I considered buying another recently but wondered if it was worth it?
As for the legalities, it isn't a phone so technically you should be ok I would have thought.

The old ones are not 'officially' used (ssb/am) as they are now uk40. Slight frequency change. You can use them as they are push to talk, and the law allows that - as long as not distracted (their way of covering their rear end!)

There are varying number of groups around the country that still use them, and I have noticed quite an uptake over recent year or so in sales of CB radios. They are bringing the frequency in line with europe soon which will boost the number of users. No licence fee is required in the UK, though there is if you use in Europe.

I mentioned this on another post sometime back - but it largely fell on deaf ears :ROFLMAO:

You can buy sets that cover you for both UK and Europe - flick of a switch and its done.

I used to use them way back ..on er..ahem AM.... and loved it too, seems like it would be good for MH;s too? Of course there are limitations on distance and so forth, but should still be good?

As has already been mentioned quite a lot of truckers use them still.....

I'll get one if you will :thumb:

needs confirmation, but i believe because it isnt a handheld receiver it is legal to use a push to talk microphone while driving.

just as i believe its legal to use a proper car phone.

taxi drivers use them (microphones) all the time.

A big thank you. Just what I thought. I was a trucker, think that's how it's spelt   more people than you think use them. Great on motorways so you can get off if blocked ahead. Speed traps. Vosa checks. Not that I worry being so upright and legal :Eeek: :Eeek: no where near the price they used to be. A complete rig for around £60. And that's new. Lots of our continental friends have them in m/h,s great if looking for somewhere to stop, wild amp or places of interest. :thumb::thumb:

I've got a midland 78 all ready to go in to the new van.

Only problem being the lack of a ground plane due to the fibreglass :/

I am ordering a mirror/bar mount and hoping the stainless roof rack or ladder is enough. Failing that I shall have to run a few earth straps or something.

You can get one designed for fibreglass vehicles that has a groundplane, in the form of a smaller whip underneath.

No. it is not illegal to use a hand held microphone with on CB or Amateur radio while driving. It is recommended though to use a hands free if possible.

It is illegal to use a mobile phone.
