i think I am a bit out of touch with bus fares. Got the bus from the C&CC site just outside Devizes into town, precisely one stop. Sue offered a handful of change for the two of us thinking the fare would be a shilling or two at the most and the bus pilot said "that will be six pounds please". For one stop, no in flight entertainment, no drinks, wi fi, nibbles or trolly dollies. Am I really that far out of touch? I know it's 40 years since I used to catch the 94 to Deansgate every day but six quid would have bought me a season ticket. Roll on bus pass qualification. They keep putting that back a year every year so I am no nearer that either......

That's why we use our passes so much, even when at home. We go to the theatre in Sheffield quite a lot and to have to pay on thebus or for parking would cost us a fortune. Last week we went to Chapel Lane CC site and used the bus into Birmingham. On both days the feeder bus only had pass holders on board and without their custom there would be no need for the service.

You still get your bus pass at 60 for now anyway. As for the cost of bus travel ,the bus runs wether there are passengers or not and you know how much it costs to run a MH let aloan a bus and the drivers wages etc.

As a family we were shocked as well with the cost of buses. We were quoted £18 for a family of 4 to go 10 mins. Got off the bus saying No! OH said we have no choice and waited for the next bus. They only wanted £12 as they thought eldest was under 18  and it suddenly became a family ticket

Not so unfortunately. From 2010 in England (it's still 60 in Wales, Scotland and NI) the bus pass age has been tied to the woman's pension age for someone born on the same day as you. For me (I'm 63) it's when I reach 65 and 5 months. How fair is that?

That depends on where you live. Here in Kent we didn't get ours until state retirement age for a woman so Joe got his when he was 61 as that was the age women born on the same date as him would get it and I got mine when I was 62 which was when I was old enough to get state pension.

I know that in London you still get it at 60 and that it is valid for buses at any time and overground trains, underground, DLR after 9.30am.

Yes mate, go through the booking procedure till the end and it will add on the extras! I still think it is £13 APD for single flights to EU, plus anything Ryanair can add on.(y)
Still bloody cheap mind, but the fares do go up by the minute.

Our local bus into town, approximately 3 miles don't sell singles now, you have to buy a return that costs £5 each, I can park for 4 hours in the centre of town for £4 and they wonder why no one uses the buses any more ?

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
They need to charge a lot as after 9.30 am it's all bus passes and no money changing hands at all.
You are so right . I don't know how they make their money.
( Probably the just same as the NHS and prescriptions )
I was walking Buster today when bus pulled up along side. Crammed with white short haired old ladies.
It was quite funny actually.

On and off for many years.
It's often cheaper to get a taxi. When we were in Carlisle it was £15 from the site we were staying to the railway station using the bus. Coming back (by taxi as the last bus was at 18.30) it was £8.50.

Our neighbours drive to the nearest bus stop and get the bus from their to Edinburgh as it is "free", but takes over 2 hours. I drive to Tweedbank and get the train which takes about 55 minutes. I don't have a bus pass (yet). I do have a railcard :)

many many years! since I was a kid
somebody has to pay to subsidise the "twirlys" as the bus company only get 50p a journey for them. when the new bus pass system came in our local council put £250k away to cover the expected bill, it was more than double that. so the council had to cut all sorts of services to cover the cost. with everything pared to the bone, its time the pass was rethought, maybe half price and not charged to council tax payers

How do you get a bus pass at 60? I'm sure I checked a couple of years ago and found only when State Pension received. Has it changed ?

Last time I used a bus pass I got thrown off, I got on at 10.35pm, as the time for the bus was supposedly 10.28, he was late and said the ticket was past the time it was working to at 10.30, I had not enough money so had to get off an walk home up the lanes. He was wrong as it was valid up to last bus which that one was.
Still a long way at night for an OAP to walk alone through the dark bits. Not amused.

Scotland doesn't - if you live in England. You can start your journey in England and travel in to Scotland but once your journey's finished you then can't use your pass again whilst still in Scotland even for a journey back to England.

Both my wife and I got our passes when we were 60,it's easy to find out just phone your local council .the reason why when in Spain the fares are cheap is because they are subsidised by the tax payers ,the costs have to be met .
