Though I would start a brewing disaster thread well I had one today
    i had mashed the brew.
was boiling my first brew in my new boiler brought it through the hot brake
had added my second addition hops.
it was boiling away nice needed to go to the toilet so nipped up to the toilet
the phone wentso i answer it
Went out side steam bellowing every where looked like a steam engine on steroids.
Went in to the brewery my brew is all over the floor running down the drain
the valve had vibrated open and dumped the lot on the floor
    just a bad brew day

Have thought about home brewing many a time.
Looked at those quick kits but was told by a brewing chap that they were not the job.
Any advice where a beginner would start ?
What basic gear do we need.
    Be a good starters guide.

Nothing wrong with a decent kit to get started with. Many people brew with kits, some are happy just to use kits and some move on to more adventurous brews.

I've just started home brewing with a starter kit bought for me by my kids.....nice thought. (y)
The first brew was a disaster as the barrel had a leak and let all the pressure out of the conditioning cycle.
Second brew I put into bottles and it is fine. Have now exchange the barrel for a new one and the next brew will be in that.
I have only used the "kits" so far and have been pleased with the results. (y):drink:

    Thanks fellas.
Any links to where you buy your kits?
    I'll have a go.

My sympathies - and I bet it took a while to clear up the sticky mess.

I'm currently drinking my most recent brewery disaster, I was sure it had gone off when I tasted it a couple of weeks ago but I have just tried it and it is fine - or it could be I have lost my sense of smell.

There may be another disaster waiting downstairs. I started a new brew on Sunday and on Monday and Tuesday it was fermenting strongly, frothing up through the fermentation lock. Then today it has just stopped. I haven't taken the gravity reading yet but I can't believe it has finished but the room was very warm - 24C which is a bit warmer than it should be. I need to summon up the courage to check it.

Put it on the other thread but am very pleased with it. We were down doing the duty last weekend and stayed with brother-in-law who was a keen brewmaster. We took two bottles of the red diesel and a few bottles of bought beer. The red diesel was all drunk up (no one even realised it was gluten free) and the bought stuff not touched.

It's cleared lovely, smells "clean" and tastes nice. I only had a taste as I'm not a drinker but the good thing frommy point of view is that I didn't have a hang over next morning! Normally when Martin has had a pint I am ill next day :)

Only thing to improve is more head and maybe a bit more fizz but will make it again.

Next time we will try the recipe for the 4 star ale - if I can find the ingredients..... need to get date syrup but might think of a substitute.

My 1st ever brew was an australian lager
Bought the kit & all the equipment needed & followed the instruction to the letter & wanting lager not beer bought a King Keg Top Tap & co2.
Made the brew & kegged it waited patiently only to find a semi sparkling beer & not a lager so I went on search for answers & ended up in a Homebrew shop in stowmarked & was advised ad ex amount of sugar & yeast blah blah kick start fermentation it should be short & give you lager the fiz you want.
    Done that & waited.
    & waited.........................
Eventually got some clear beer & set out drinking it & oh boy what I had invertanly made was beer flavoured whisky & a pint had me on my back another half & was done out cold.....................................
