Anyone got any idea what these would have been for? OH reckons a top box, but there's a kind of access hole which has been bunged up ... ? There are four brackets, arranged in a square about 14" or 15" apart.

they look like mounting brackets for a solar panel that has since been removed.

Prize is a day cleaning out the filthy oven we've inherited  !

No idea what it was ... no mention was made of a solar panel ...

it looks like solar panel brackets and the hole would be where the wires went through the roof, although ours like i would imagine most has a 'gland cover' to help protect from imclement weather

What is the lump of mastic next to the bracket in the second picture?

It looks like some sort of repair has been made. You may want to check check that it is water tight if it is covering a hole in the roof

Solar panel would make sense, but Brian's has multiple owners so no idea at all of who's done what to him. The hole is - now! - watertight, but we had no idea if it was when we got it. No signs of water getting in, though, and it certainly won't now; a stainless steel cap sealed in and over with Seamseal, which is why it looks like a cupcake. Boy, is this one learning curve!
