Boxer radio (1 Viewer)

We have a 3 year old Boxer, no not the dog ! Peugeot, that from new has had the worst radio and reception I have ever known. The CD part of it is fine but the FM radio cuts out in poor reception areas (lamost anywhere) and LW/MW is nearly useless. The van has no detectable aerial on it and I wondered if it actually has one or not, it's an Elddis 120 anybody know ? Strangley we also have a Peugeot car, it's radio is none too brilliant either ! oh:

We had the same issues.
Two possible scenarios and neither great !

1) If you have the facelift pug ( 2007 on ) then there is every chance the aerial is in a mirror
Total crap idea !

2) If you have a pre-facelift pug then chances are you have no aerial at all !! The converter will have simply removed the thing leaving the wire in place just to confuse the issue

Either way, the only real answer is to go to a car shop and get a proper aerial ( and I mean proper, not one of those stick on the inside of the windscreen things ) and mount it on the wing.

It is not a bad job on either model but do make sure you remove all the pint from the inside of the wing so it makes a good earth ( else you will be back where you started from again ! )
Once fitted coat the inside with a bit of underseal or similar to ensure no rust has a chance !

Quite a way from Norfolk, North Yorkshire, only visit Norfolk once a year for the summer show in early July. Thanks for the offer anyway, will get myself a big drill, ten pound lump hammer and to comply with health and Safety, steel capped boots, goggles, safety helmet and steel mittens, job done.

dont forget to put a bit of masking tape on the paint before drilling the hole as it helps to stop the drill skating all over the panel.

and dont drill the hole until you are absolutely sure you can access the back of it to tighten the fittings.

also, use a circular hole cutter...not a regular twist bit, unless its a very small hole. the wing steel is like tinfoil and will deform as you drill using a twist bit.

i had a 2002 Ducato base and had to remove the entire o/s wing to fit an aerial.

not a difficult job, but time consuming.

The radio on my Boxer is the worst one Ive ever had on any
vehicle,its got a wing mounted stubby black ariel so I think you may have to accept bad reception or change the radio.

Replace the thing with a proper aerial and all should be well

It is VERY VERY rare for the front end ( the actual bit that does the receiving ) to go 'deaf'.. Yes, it does happen but as said, incredibly rare

I have the post 2007 Boxer and previously I had the 2006 Boxer model. Both have the stubby aerial on the offside wing.

Both had truly crap radio reception, particularly on AM, and both shared the same crappy radio.

Changing the radio itself actually made a real substantial improvement.:thumb:

I still have to get around to changing the aerial to improve things even more...

Think my radio (Pug 2007) has been changed but it's still crap with a screen mounted ariel. And another thing, I've never looked at the handbook but the steering wheel switches suggest there are controls for the radio although they don't work on the current installation, or would they be for a phone?

If the original radio has been removed that's most probably why the steering wheel radio/cd/volume wheel controls will not work.

There is a lead at the back of the radio, which comes from the steering wheel controls, which plugged into the original radio for the remote function.......

Most replacement radios will not be compatible...... but the radios should normally be better, our is...

Unless the replacement radio has the plug ins for the steering wheel controls they aint gonna work :Sad:

Callum, if you fitted a new radio then yep, the front ends have improved dramatically over the past few years and knowing Pug they are still fitting the same units they fitted in chariots !

But it is always a LOT cheaper to replace an aerial that a radio.. and a went lollipop on a bit of string is often better than those horrid rubber ducky things !

Strangely the peugeot boxer we had, had a marvellous radio in it but this Fiat we now have is terrible with no reception in places and we put it down to being a DAB radio with rubbish reception so only use the cd now, there is no aerial visible either.

I really do fail to see how they expect digital radio to be of any real use in cars unless the transmitters outputs are more than doubled in power ( radio waves are like light and gains are logarithmic when you talk about VHF and above frequencies*. A 3.8dB gain, i.e. double the output, in ideal conditions is likely to give an extra 12.5% range increase )

You can get adapters to connect the existing wiring to the head unit to allow the original controls to work.

I've got the same cab as your pug, it's a Fiat (badge engineering) Had a lot of trouble with the Radio. Couldn't find the Aerial, recently fitted a Windscreen Aerial.
No drilling! No phaffing about, Just remove 8 screws Job done in an hour, that included a cup of coffee.
Just got back from a Rally with the MCS CC&C Radio reception A1 all the way there and back.:thumb::thumb:
