I have a 1991 Hymer with the "Orange peel" finish (see pic below)

Over the winter black streaks have appeared on all sides of the van. No problem I thought and attacked it with "Fenwicks Black Streak Remover" but it hasn't even touched it. Has anyone had any success cleaning this age (and rough finish) of van? if so what can you recommend?

Hi, have you tried 'Showroom Shine/Greased lightening '? You can order it on the shopping channel on the internet Ideal World.
Its about £30 for 3 Litre, and it has no problem with the streaks on my van.

Thanks for that, I'll have look.
I'm guessing your van is a nice smooth shiny type, I think that is maybe the issue for me. But I could be wrong, I'm relatively new to this!!

"The Hymer S700 is a one piece fibreglass moulding.

I used to sell caravans and when I got a very dirty van in I would wet it and then spread Domestos on the roof and walls. I then left it for a while to work then washed it off. I finished off with a wash with a Flash solution then a good rinse. Worked every time.

I have used a not too hard brush to clean the sides of my 1992 Hymer S700 with no problems.

As for those black streaks and stuborn mould, I think I have bought every product known to man and possibly more, I have enough to start my own market stall Link Removed any way the best thing I have found and it is very good is Bio Pro wash n wax caravan and boat shampoo, it goes a long way it works, I usually buy it at the shows from Dave the whole product range (apart from the glass cleaner) is superb and does what it says on the tin, they are in Ashbourne Derby 01332 824848 cheaper at shows but if you need it well worth a call.

I have no connection with this company at all, but all donations gratefully received for all the crap I bought at great exspense to find a good oneLink RemovedLink Removed.

All the best Rick

i got fed up fighting the black streaks with so called streak removers so a GENTLE application of T cut followed by wax did the trick.

motorhome was smooth panelled and white gel coat so no paint to rub through.

I just discovered the best thing for black streaks. My new ( old) Hymer has a gutter on three sides that takes any water from the roof straight to the floor. It looks like a small awning channel; it works, no black streaks::bigsmile:

Hi

We used to have a caravan with the same finish. I found the Black streak remover worked well if you aggitated it with a small soft brush. I used a clean shoe polish brush and worked on about a two foot square area at a time.

Just what I thought, I did it exactly as you suggest, but no joy

i had some black streaks and black in the hinges of the cabinet on the side of my beloved Matilda (my motorhome known at a lot of race circuits); nothing could shift the remnants.
Chatting to one of the SuperLeague car teams in the pits at Silverstone (as you do) I mentioned this and he suggested Bounce tumble drier sheets! :ROFLMAO:
Chatting a few months later and stains darker I was discussing the merits of a good gleam on an old car as the team were clearing the remains of several swarms of insects in a hot sun (not pretty on a white jag!) again in the pits and paddock he too said Bounce sheets.
A firm disbeliever I went and got a pack .... a dab a water and a gentle rub and sure enough all of the black has gone; even inside the hinges!!!! OK it took a couple or three rubs and about ten minutes; but theyhad been building up for over a year and various attempts to remove them had failed!
impressed .... my pressed had not been so immed in a long time!:ROFLMAO:
My beloved Matilda has a loveerly perfume too!!! a quick dab behind each wing mirror when going out.
So Bounce sheets have the professional car cleaner approval as well as mine!

The fenwicks black streak remover is a pre watered down version of the motorhome cleaner use the motorhome cleaner 10to1 or even neat on a sponge and wash off straight away halfords sell this motorhome cleaner as well as dealers shops

read this review

http://www.fenwicks.info/news_and_reviews.htm

I also use this watered down on my alloy wheels as it shifts brake dust etc really well and does not damage them

Hi Graham,

I use Traffic Film Remover (Traffic 110 + Wax), which is produced by Image Chemical Products, and I purchase it from P G & C Nottingham in a 5ltr container.

I wet the bodywork, apply a diluted solution from a spray bottle, and I brush it into the paintwork, rinsing off immediately. On really stubborn stains I use it neat, but again, rinse it off immediately. I do this in stages, rather than all at once.

This is never carried out on a sunny day, as if left to dry, it will stain the paintwork/fibreglass, and only a good polishing will remove the staining...........writes he from experience.

Autosmart will no doubt do a similar product, and may be closer to you on the Humber.

HTH, :thumb:

Hi Graham

No, Nomadic is another member who saw my post on Motorhome365 Association (website for Full timers) and reposted it here.

I got a bit enthusiastic with a T Cut type cleaner while trying to shift these stains and the dimples went on one place, while trying to remove the stain. They are plastic not paint.

The black comes from the rubber trim, so getting that clean and waxing it, will cut the black streaks down considerably.

I still believe in neat Domestos to get rid of green mold and around the rubber trim, then finish with neat flash liquid to get dirt out of the dimple finish. I used a soft but stiff scrubbing brush to do this. Then wash the van in the normal way with a flash in water solution. Then a good swill with clean water.

I polished the van in May last year with Autoglym and it still doesn't look to bad. However the van has been in mainly dry Spain this winter.

Hope you get it clean.

John

Save your brass and just use ordinary household bleech on a cloth. It should do the job.
Just be carefull if you get it on any graphics and wash off with cold water A.S.A.P.
A great many of the "wonder cleaners" are not what they're cracked up to be and cost a bomb.:winky:

I,ve tried this and it really is a wonder polish, however I think it's overspecified for what you want (it's marketed as a waterless cleaner) and therefore overpriced, especially when my wife found it worked wonders on shower cubicle glass, she used it on all the glass in the house and it really did become expensive. For black streaks I get a tub of 'Silky' from the local accessory shop and find it works wonders 2 or £3, last time I bought some there was also a new improved formulae in a pump dispenser that included wax but in my opinion was not as good as the original Silky.

UPDATE...........

Well, after spending months, and a fortune trying to solve the black streak problem (and thanks for all the suggestions) It has finally been solved using CILLIT BANG!!

Just have to make sure it is rinsed off quickly.

I couldn't believe it after all the specialist products proved to be no good at all.

About a year ago we found the magic cleaner 'Elbow Grease' stocked by Yorkshire Discount, Boyes, most decent hardware shops and many Pound shops and YES! priced at
ONE POUND, it is chemical free, the main ingredient, Lemon Juice.
I totally cleaned a 36' Static (untouched for a year) in 2 hours.
A brilliant piece of kit, it will clean the finest fabrics without any harm.
Black Streaks on the Van are a thing of the past, we use it outside and inside on all surfaces. It is a winner.
Best Regards, Mac

We have a product that removes these black streak marks simply by spraying on and wiping away with a piece of terry towel. We can bring some to the bring & buy meet.
It has never failed us yet at removing black streaks.
Erindoors uses it on a multitude of things in the MH and at home and it's eco friendly and non toxic & non solvent.

Hi Glynn,
Sorry to trouble you but could you possibly let me know what product removes black streaks with a spray on and wipe off solution? I have tried and failed to solve this problem over many years (20!). Despite this, I have to follow up any lead and I'm hoping that you might share your secret with me so that I can actually look forward to cleaning my Compass Drifter 390 one again. I would for ever be in your debt.
Kind regards, Alan Spring.
P.S. Do I have to register to be able to see your reply? Thank you for your help.

Our issue is the rubber trim seals that separates (or joins) the main aluminum panels on our Hymer. Really blotchy black in places. Told brake cleaner was a good solution?
