If you just want some decent warmth you should not need to go all the way down South, there are some lovely places along the Loire or Dordogne and the coast at La Rochelle Honfleur etc is very nice, just depends what sort of scenery you want.

What's the easiest route down to the south. I'm not used to driving on the other side of road but think I will manage well once I get started.

Can I suggest you get one of these for route planning.

Michelin grands itinaires, it will help you to get a feel for the main routes and the scale of it. France is a big country. It will also indicate toll and non toll routes.

My Sister lives about 60 miles south of Toulouse and she says its between 35 to 40 degrees there at this time of year. Thats a lot of heat! I would prefer the South in Spring or Autumn when the temperatures are more pleasant. The Vendee is nice and warm around now....

We stayed at a nice one in Fleurance. Nice small town, municipal pool nearby. Free to overnight and tokens for elec and water (which we didn't use).

Just got back from France , we used primarily Aires , 4 days at parc Verger , 1 week in Antibes and a couple of wild camps .
Don't worry about planning it really is easy in France !
As for temperature , it varied between boiling and sat with feet in bucket of cold water and wet flannel on head . We travelled in an anticlockwise circuit of the country . I agree with the above posts , it is a massive country !
p.s. the new " all the Aires " book is out of date with Aires pricing , as almost all had gone up .

Irnbru , you will be surprised at how warm you will be in the north , the med is virtually unbearable , day and night ( well for a northern boy like me anyway ! )
Bonne chance et bonne journee .
