Just looked on the map in terrain mode and it looks like the A71 goes through some fairly high mountainous regions.

Is this true and if so is there a better way ?

It does indeed. Roadside littered with snowploughs and there are snow gates. In winter I would go via Poitiers and Bordeaux

My response assumed that you were then going on to the A75, which is the high part, about 1100 metres

We have done it the last two years, Rouen, Chatre (overnight at Marboue), Angouleme (overnight at Nersac), Bordeaux, St Jean de Luz,San Sebastian (overnight at San Sebastián) then it's a climb over towards Pamplona and Zaragoza and we stop at Navaja about 300 miles later and about 40 miles from Sagunt on the coast and then right for Valencia and Benidorm and left for Barcelona.

This is a minimal toll route as you follow the N10 through France for a chunk of the way and you don't need to pay at all to cross Spain as ther are perfectly good roads at the side of the toll road sections.

Worth a read. http://about-france.com/tourism/routes-to-spain.htm

Cheers guys.

We never do tolls in France but do not mind them in Spain MArtin,,, and looking at the route you take seems to once again be pretty mountainous !

But using Clickem's info.................
OK.. and then where to ?
Cut across on the A62 and Toulouse ?
That seems to go betwixt the mountains a bit

I have been caravanning for 32 years but in 2014 I have"gone over to the dark side"
A16 & A28 to Tours
A10 to Bordeaux
A62 & A61 to Narbonne
A9 & E15/AP7 ot Benidorm.

Great road - nearly all motorway/dual carriageway - no hills - no problem :)

It has some Toll sections though ;)

The bump up and over Spain is a bit but I understand they do a good job of keeping it clear.

Doing southern Spain every year for the past wee while we have always taken the route via Bordeaux, then straight down via San Sebastian, Validolid etc.

Usually encounter a fair bit of snow and on occasions freezing fog.. and yes, always plenty of snow ploughs out and roads kept remarkably clear..
But I never enjoy that section ( to say the least ), hence looking for a route that will avoid as far as possible any big stuff

Sooooooo.. with all the info supplied by you good people, the plan is
Bordeaux via non peage roads, over to Narbonne, again non peage roads, then head south on whatever roads present them selves

We usually average about 400+ miles a days so 3 days should cover it easily
We are on the 2320 hrs train on the 14th, will plot up at first convenient place in France..
Next day get down to around the Bordeaux area, next day Perpignan and on the 17th arrive at La Torreta :)

We will be heading through Bordeaux, Biarritz into Spain all non payage. We are booked into villasol from the 22nd, thought we may spend the first few days near benicassim before heading down. For the first time we are going from Portsmouth to Caen.
