We went there a good few years back ... didn't particularly like it because we were made to feel very uncomfortable due to the attitude of the wardens to dogs ... we were told that we HAD to take them to the dog walk area or off site for their ablutions, but the only spot was well away from both ... have you ever tried to get 3 dogs to 'hold on' in a morning when they are wanting to go for a wee ...! We even felt like we had 'eyes' on us just sitting out on the grass with the dogs ... never went back.

On the positive side it's a well placed site for going into town but still a fair walk so be prepared for that, if you need transport to get there from the site then use bikes or public transport rather than take a car as parking in the centre will be difficult.

The friends we met in Bristol took the bus into town as parking was a nightmare.

Many thanks everyone. We are visiting my daughter who lives in central Bristol so looking for somewhere to stay.
Bearing in mind we will have the wee IQ on the back do you think going deep into the city is viable or should we consider somewhere out of the city a bit ?

Thanks again !

Have you looked at availability? When I looked last week there weren't many dates left - just a few single days between now and December!

We'll be there for our usual pre-Christmas shopping/eating/drinking spree :)

Easy to get into the City, as others have said, Water taxi/ferry, or, a gentle 1/2hour stroll onto town, or out the front gate 100metres up the road and go by bus. To my mind anyway the Ferry is the most relaxing.
Always a problem getting in though to book, only this week we saw 2 days available, but with this new booking system the C&MC have we gave up, the graph told us the days were available, but the system wouldn't let us book

We love Bristol and the site serves its purpose . It's great when the sun shines , just go through the gate onto the waters edge with your favourite tipple, very nice. I enjoy the walk round the harbour , so does Laika the wonder dog.
This is the view from the gate at the site.
Enjoy your visit.

It is difficult to get in but they do have a wating list forcancellations (I'm on it for 1st April - no joked please!). Otherwise just keep looking at the website booking thing. They do get cancellations nearer the dates because people book as soon as booking opens for the following year andthen cancel nearer the time. We've always managed too get in just by holding our nerve.

The Cottage pub next door has 'No Dogs' sign outside but have used dog friendly pub going to the right out of the main gate and over the bridge in an old pump house. Called pump house or similar.
Water taxis brilliant and dog friendly.

The approach through the city is not the most pleasant and, although we didn't, it would be easy to take the wrong turning. Site brilliant for the city as others have said but we didn't find it very dog friendly as ours doesn't like drops or edges, in this case the waters edge. Dreary walk around the back streets for necessary jobs once or twice a day.

Agree, immediately around the site hardly any grass which is difficult with a choosy dog like ours.
We have been a few times as my son lives there. There is a lovely walk along the river and under the suspension bridge along a cycle route from which you can turn left up into the woods. There is also a park fairly nearby (think its called Greville). Also if you get the boat accross the water its a quick walk to the park with the Cabot tower.
None of these are much good though if you have a dog with limited mobility/old age.:)

There are quite a few dog friendly pubs/restaurants. We couldnt get in the pump house as too near Xmas but on our list to go another time. Was it nice?

There is a dog-friendly pub towards the SS Great Britain, just by the Albion Dock, called the Orchard. Good ale and live music. Look out for Banksy's Girl With A Pearl Earring on the nearby wall :)
Does it do food as well as good ale @Janine.
It was a couple of years ago we ate in the Pump House but I think it was interesting food rather than huge amounts,if that helps but may be different now. Stayed on site last Dec, The Cottage was still no dogs then.

It didn't do food when we were there in summer and is more of a traditional cider pub looks a bit rough outside but please don't let it put you off going in one of the friendliest pubs we've ever drank in
Re girl with the pearl earing
We walked past it twice so keep an eye out down the little alley around the butty van near the boat yard ;)

I can also recommend walking through to Southville.
You need to cross the footbridge over the river Avon (near the site's entrance) and walk the length of Greenway Bush Lane. See map below. The main road at the top, North Street, is home to a lot of independent cafe/restaurants and shops. Worth a visit is the popular Sunday Market at the Tobacco Factory. One of the few remaining Wills buildings. We love the theatre there. It is adjacent to the Aldi supermarket on the map.
