I usually drive around 60. The problem with that in the UK is that you get the middle laners who end up blocking you in behind slow moving or joining traffic. That or you have to make four lane changes to go around them. So I then end up speeding up as the lack of lane discipline here is frustrating and damn 8leeding annoying.

Then, if you do 70. Some idiot seem to feel that you should not be doing so and certainly not in anything but the inside lane. Often making dangerous moves to point his/her opinion out to you.

On the continent, we tend to do 55-60 on the motorways. But, I briefly got to 40 meters per second on a German Autobahn on the way to Austria. That was before we fitted the sat dish mind!.

I did not know the speed limit for trucks had gone up to 60 mph. I used to travel at 56 mph so that I could put the cruise control on, set it at 56 and go to sleep.

There is so little stress when you travel 1/2 mph slower than everybody else. You don't need to juggle your eyes on the next lane and time your manoeuvre carefully. instead you can relax.

I have spotted MHs pass me on the M6 at great speed and then noticed them again at Dover docks about 3 vehicles ahead of me.

I always set my speed at about the same speed as the truck in front of me! I don't like holding up working men as I used to be one. Whether on the way to Dover or miles on the continent, this rule always applies. I don't want to be one of the camper drivers who get sarky remarks from that twerp Clarkson. I must admit that I've noticed a slight increase in speed of the HGVs recently.

If I'm driving, anywhere from an indicated 60-70 mph depending on the day. Conversely, if Cindy drives, it's fair to say that gravity appears to have a disproportionate effect on her right foot, as she can be regularly way north of my numbers...:whistle:

We try and keep to around 60 to be as economical as possible and if we're towing.. Sometimes though if we're not towing we can end up as fast as 80 for periods ..

Since May 05 (Ex Tuggers).
If driving the MH on the Motorway I tend to stick at 100kmh (62mph) however that soon changes due to the number of middle lane hoggers, whereupon like TeeMyob, I have to speed up and make at least two lane changes to get by them.

Until very recently, the speed limits for vehicles over 7.5t were, 40 mph on single carriageways, 50 mph on dual carriageways, and 60mph on motorways.
The revised speed limits for these vehicles now are, 50mph, 60mph, and 60mph, however, as always, an EU directive requires those vehicles to be fitted with a speed limiter, which is set at a maximum of 56mph (90kmh)

Cheers,

Jock.

Between 65 and 75, strangely my van does better mpg or at least the same when going above 60, i think the peak torque must be at about 70, it really loves to be driven at that speed

I'm with you on this, whether I'm doing 60 or 70 I still get around 32 to the gallon. Wife on the other hand has a heavy right foot and she would be cruising at 80 if I let her.

Not the norm but in my old T5 I sometimes took it up over the 100mph. It felt perfectly comfortable at that speed and still had some in reserve.. Not in this country of course but I now average like Chris around 65/75.

I spent a few years doing long distance dispatch work ( average year I would clock up about 112k miles ).
I learned then that the arrival times between higher speeds and slower was virtually zero anyway..

Depends on traffic flow for me, I usually latch on to someone in front with the same motorway speed & overtaking anticipation etc.
Normally about 65ish, only go up to the 70's when surrounded by impatient clowns just to get out of the way.
Then calm down to the 60's when I've found a clearer stretch.
I like a decent gap between me & the one in front, better still if it's clear altogether.
Much prefer those lovely long straight French roads for chilling out on.

I take the drive as part of the holiday and stay around 55 mph and allow trucks to pass me easily if they wish. Just a flick of the nearside indicator to let them know and they are past you and acknowledge your courtesy normally.
There again as I live on the Isle of Wight and there is only threequarters of a mile of dual carriageway 55 is very fast for us.
Also I didn't realize that you could get even that fast on the M25 which I will have to use soon to get to Sandwich. The alternative routes look even worse than the M25

New to this. (January)
Only been out in our van twice this year so far. Just found the fuel consumption reading and 'IF' that is accurate van is returning 36mpg at an average speed of 55-60mph (Elddis Suntor Peugeot 2.2 boxer). Not had it long and was pleasantly surprised. However... came as a bit of a shock when I first filled up from near empty? Similar to refuelling a Vulcan bomber!!!
Not being used to these things!!! However back to the main thread... Never travel faster than 60, can't see the point really on holiday :cooler:
besides roads in the North West of Scotland not wide enough or straight enough... Ha Ha.

Every time I've used the M25 between the M26 and M3 it's been fine. I like Sandwich, 'tis a nice place.

I generally use the sat nav for speed indication, and it also stores trips and max speeds. I reset it a while ago and was alarmed to see that the top recorded speed had been registered at 87mph......
Cant blame Mrs A, she hasn't driven it yet

Just got back from Dover to Glasgow....... set the cruise to 55mph (50mph on sat nav) and over 505 miles we managed 41.86 miles to the gallon. And that was fully loaded with a LOT of wine in the garage.

I find cruising at that speed is stress free (never catch any one up!) and allows the lorries to overtake.

60 mph @ 2000 rpm and just watch the world go by. At this speed and engine revs, everything just goes quiet, any faster and the wind noise starts to build up ( though did 86 once to try it and hit a quiet spot there to ) any slower and I tend to need to change down now and again. My 5th gear seems really high so it's almost a 'natural' speed/revs for 60 mph - uphill, down dale on the motorway. No different with toad on either.
Stay safe and enjoy the scenery.

bru, I'd lay a pound to a pinch that wasn't the owner driving.... Possibly a delivery driver?
Nope - we drive at that speed, always have done, however we have a Van Conversion - so not a big motorhome, and even at that speed, are regularly overatken by deliver drivers in similar unconverted van.
